Artificial 3D Reef

A reef printed on a 3D printer was installed in the lagoon near the island in August 2018. Scientists and enthusiasts hope that this experimental project will help unique corals survive the global warming. The world's largest artificial reef comprises hundreds of ceramic and concrete modules and is expected to become the frame of a living ecosystem.

The project was designed by the Melbourne Lab. Complex computer modeling was used to create reef structures resembling those found in the Maldives. The artificial reef is settled next to the existing coral nursery. Coral fragments gradually expand and colonize the neighboring technological structure, adjust and create a larger coral reef ecosystem.
