When searching for a hotel in the Maldives, you may come across a situation where the cost of a stay at the same resort differs significantly across different websites. The reason is not always a markup or a discount. Behind what looks like a similar price at first glance may be different villa categories, meal plans, transfers, taxes and booking conditions.

What is included in the cost of a Maldives holiday

Depending on the resort, rate and booking platform, the final cost may include:

• accommodation in the selected villa or room category;
• the selected meal plan;
• transfer to the resort and back;
• applicable taxes and mandatory fees;
• special offers and additional services, if they are included in the rate.

The exact contents depend on the selected resort and rate and are specified in the offer and booking confirmation.

Taxes and fees

Taxes and fees should not be overlooked.

From July 1, 2025, tourism services are subject to TGST at a rate of 17%. In addition, resorts charge a service fee of at least 10%. Green Tax is paid separately - an environmental fee of 12 dollars per person for every 24 hours of stay. Children under two years old are exempt. The environmental fee is calculated separately and is not subject to TGST.

Therefore, the final cost of accommodation can differ noticeably from the base villa price if taxes and fees were not included in it from the start.

International flights and travel insurance are usually paid separately unless otherwise provided for and confirmed by a specific offer.

Why the same hotel can cost differently

The same resort name does not mean that you are comparing identical offers. Sometimes the difference comes down to a single parameter, but it can significantly affect the final amount.

Villa category

Beach Villa, Water Villa and Water Villa with Pool at the same resort can differ noticeably in price. Size, location, presence of a pool, direct access to the beach or lagoon and other features of the category all matter.

In practice, two offers for the same hotel can look almost identical, although one is calculated for a Beach Villa and the other for a Water Villa with Pool. Therefore, when comparing prices, the first thing to check is the exact name of the accommodation category.

The villa's location can also affect the price. For example, the same villa category with a sunrise or sunset view can cost more than a garden villa. As a rule, some of the most expensive categories are overwater villas with a pool and panoramic lagoon views.

Rate conditions

At the same time, a hotel may offer several rates:

• with free cancellation until a certain date;
• non-refundable;
• with an early booking discount;
• with special conditions for a long stay;
• as part of a seasonal promotion.

A lower price sometimes means stricter cancellation or date-change conditions. Therefore, when selecting options, Wiotto specialists pay attention not only to the cost but also to the rules of the specific rate.

What the offer includes

Another common reason for a price difference is a different set of included services.

For example, one offer may include only accommodation and breakfast, while another includes All Inclusive, transfer to the island and additional resort bonuses. The second option will cost more when booking, but the final expenses during the trip may be lower.

That is why it is more correct to compare not only the total amount, but the entire contents of the offer.

Why hotel transfer affects the cost

Maldivian resorts are located on separate islands, and after arriving at the international airport, the journey usually continues. Depending on the resort's location, the following are used:

1. speedboat;
2. domestic flight followed by a speedboat transfer;
3. seaplane.

Hotels located near Malé, primarily in North and South Malé Atolls, usually offer speedboat transfers. The journey to the nearest islands takes 10-30 minutes, while more distant ones take about an hour.

North and South Ari, Vaavu, Baa, Lhaviyani, Noonu, Raa and Dhaalu Atolls are at a medium distance. Depending on the specific resort, the transfer here may be by speedboat or seaplane. A speedboat is usually cheaper, but the journey can take 1.5-2 hours or more, while a seaplane flight takes about 20-40 minutes.

For the most remote atolls - Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Laamu, Gaafu Alif, Gaafu Dhaalu and Addu - seaplanes or domestic flights are used, often followed by a speedboat transfer. Therefore, the farther the resort is from Malé, the higher the likelihood that you will need to reach it by air.

A detail that can be missed when booking independently: seaplanes operate only during daylight hours. If the international flight arrives late, it may not be possible to reach a remote resort on the same day. In that case, an overnight stay in Malé or Hulhumalé and transfer to the island the next day will be required.

Keep in mind that a seaplane transfer can cost several hundred dollars per person, so two resorts with similar villa prices can sometimes differ noticeably in the final cost of the holiday.

How the meal plan affects the trip budget

Comparing prices of Maldivian resorts without considering meals is also not entirely correct.

The main options:

• Bed & Breakfast (BB) - breakfast;
• Half Board (HB) - half board;
• Full Board (FB) - full board;
• All Inclusive (AI) - all inclusive;
• Premium All Inclusive and other extended programmes.

There is an important feature specific to the Maldives. Most resorts occupy a separate island, so in the evening you cannot simply leave the hotel and have dinner at a neighbouring café. If only breakfast is booked, lunches, dinners and drinks will have to be paid for at the resort's restaurants. It is also important: resort islands do not have shops and markets - only hotel infrastructure.

Therefore, a cheap BB rate does not always mean lower trip expenses. If you plan to have lunch and dinner every day at the resort's restaurants and order drinks, Half Board or All Inclusive can sometimes be more economical than accommodation with breakfast only. Why the cost of a holiday keeps changing

Hotels in the Maldives do not have one fixed price for the entire year. The cost depends on:

• the season;
• resort occupancy;
• availability of a specific villa category;
• how far in advance the check-in date is;
• current special offers;
• length of stay;
• exchange rates and the conditions of the specific rate.

For example, after a promotion is launched, the price of a certain villa category may decrease. Before popular dates, the situation can be the opposite: the most affordable categories sell out and only more expensive options remain available.

Therefore, the price a traveller saw a few weeks ago will not necessarily still be current today.

How hotel special offers work

Many Maldivian resorts regularly offer special rates and bonuses. Among the most common are:

• early booking discounts;
• free additional nights;
• meal plan upgrades;
• special conditions for long stays;
• bonuses for honeymooners;
• free or discounted accommodation for children;
• discounts on transfers.

At the same time, the largest percentage discount does not always result in the lowest final cost. Promotion conditions differ: they may apply only to certain villa categories, stay dates, meal plans or a minimum trip duration.

Therefore, when comparing offers, it is important to look at the final amount and the promotion conditions, not only at the size of the stated discount.

Conversely, after clarifying the details, it is sometimes possible to find a less well-known resort that better matches expectations and at the same time costs less than the option initially selected.

4. whether taxes and mandatory fees are included;
5. whether cancellation conditions and applicable special offers are the same.

Only after that does it make sense to compare the final cost.

In the Maldives, an option that looks more expensive at first can often be more rational if it already includes transfer, meals or other services that would have to be paid for separately in a cheaper offer. That is why selecting a holiday here is better started not by searching for the lowest price, but by understanding what trip format you need and what you will receive for the stated amount.
