Why choose it: a beautiful natural island, a strong house reef, an intimate atmosphere and only 25 minutes by boat from Malé.

A small, densely green island surrounded by a house reef. Good snorkeling spots can be reached directly from the shore, while the local dive centre has operated since 1979 and is considered one of the oldest in the Maldives. Another major advantage is the location. The journey from Malé Airport takes only 25 minutes by boat. For a resort with a reef like this, that is really convenient.

The atmosphere here is calm and mainly aimed at couples. There is no kids' club and no noisy entertainment programme. But for privacy and a reset, there is everything you need: beach and overwater villas, trips on a traditional dhoni, journeys to a sandbank, diving and dinners by the ocean. Lighthouse deserves a special mention - an overwater restaurant and one of Baros's signatures.

This is a classic resort island that has welcomed guests since 1973, making it a true legend of Maldivian tourism whose service level is not inferior to newer and more fashionable resorts.

Why choose it: a remote atoll, a good house reef, diving and the opportunity to experience the Maldives a little closer to their natural side.

Six Senses Laamu is located far from busy Malé, on the green island of Olhuveli in Laamu Atoll. There are beach and overwater villas, a house reef, good dive sites and the well-known Yin Yang surf spot. The resort's main advantage is its approach to the natural environment. A whole team of marine biologists works on the island, and at the SHELL centre you can learn more about corals, turtles and manta rays.

Six Senses is a five-star resort with service worthy of its level: a large choice of villas, a spa and good gastronomy. But the most interesting part begins in the ocean. You can go snorkeling with a marine biologist and meet turtles and rays during an ordinary swim by the reef. Diving enthusiasts also have plenty to explore - there are many interesting sites around the atoll.

Gili Lankanfushi

Why choose it: spacious overwater villas, a high level of service and a barefoot-luxury style holiday.

Gili Lankanfushi has no beach villas - the entire resort is built over the lagoon. Even the entry-level category is impressive in size: the overwater villas feel more like small houses with open living rooms, terraces and steps directly into the ocean. There are also separate Crusoe Residences standing in the lagoon away from the main island. The resort's signature feature is the Mr./Ms. Friday service. Each villa has a dedicated assistant who handles everyday matters and organises the stay, but without creating a feeling of constant staff presence.

In addition to standard activities, you can watch a film among the palms at Jungle Cinema, visit the underground wine cellar or stop by By The Sea - a Japanese restaurant in tropical greenery serving sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki. At sunset, you can spend time at the overwater bar with open lagoon views.

Hurawalhi Maldives

Why choose it: for guests aged 15+, the famous 5.8 underwater restaurant and a good choice of activities.

Hurawalhi is a small five-star resort in Lhaviyani Atoll with only 90 villas, and it does not accept guests under 15. You can stay on the beach or over the water, including in a villa with a private pool. It is calm during the day, but the island is far from boring: there is diving, water and land sports, a spa, and excursions in search of manta rays and dolphins. Evenings can be varied with entertainment programmes at the beachfront Coco Bar.

One of the resort's main features is the 5.8 restaurant. The name refers to the depth: the dining room is located 5.8 metres below the lagoon surface, with views of reef life through glass walls.

Why choose it: a huge choice of activities, holidays with children, All Inclusive, villas with private pools and slides leading into the lagoon.

Siyam World is a large island where you can spend a week and still not try every activity. It has the largest floating water park in the Maldives, with slides, trampolines and an obstacle course, as well as a football field, padel, water sports and even its own horse ranch. You can ride horses around the island, and these rides look especially impressive on the beach at sunset. A popular activity for photo shoots. Kidz World is available for children, while adults have shows and parties.

The choice of villas is very diverse. There are beach options, large residences for families and groups, and many overwater villas have their own pool and a slide leading directly into the lagoon. The gastronomy is just as impressive - more than 20 restaurants and bars, from Thai and Indian to Japanese and Maldivian.

Why choose it: a solid 4-star resort, a beautiful natural island, a strong house reef and a successful separation of areas for couples and families.

Vilamendhoo is a fairly large green island in South Ari, but the holiday is organised so that guests hardly disturb one another. Adults have a separate area with an infinity pool and a bar overlooking the lagoon, while families have a large pool among tropical greenery, a children's pool and a playground. For accommodation, couples may prefer a Jacuzzi Beach Villa or an overwater villa, while families with children will be more comfortable in beach villas or Garden Rooms.

The island is surrounded by a reef, and you can access it from almost any side. The resort has a dive centre that organises impressive trips in search of whale sharks, manta rays and turtles.

OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO

Why choose it: good All Inclusive, modern villas, wild nature and only 50 minutes by boat from Malé.

Helengeli looks more natural and a little wilder than many carefully manicured resort islands. There is dense greenery, narrow paths among the palms and the ocean very close by. After the latest renovation of the 4-star hotel, the accommodation choice became much more interesting: overwater villas with pools and sunrise or sunset views appeared, along with two-bedroom family villas and large beach suites. A rather unusual option is the Lagoon Villa, standing on the boundary between beach and lagoon, half on land and half over the water.

The hotel operates on an All Inclusive basis and offers a versatile Island Plan that includes not only meals and drinks, but also some activities, snorkeling and several excursions. There is a separate infinity pool for adults, a spa, a kids' club and several restaurants. The island is located at the entrance to a sea channel, which is why Helengeli is well known among divers.

Why choose it: a renovated resort in Baa, good service and gastronomy, with the opportunity to see manta rays at Hanifaru.

After a major renovation at Reethi, upgraded villas were opened and the dining options expanded, but the most important feature remained unchanged - a large green island in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The island has eight restaurants and bars: you can dine by an open fire at Alifaan, try Asian cuisine over the water at Kaiyo or order a private beach dinner with your own menu. The island also has an infinity pool, a separate children's pool and club, a spa and a PADI dive centre. The famous Hanifaru Bay and its remarkable manta rays are only 20 minutes from the hotel.

Lily Beach specialises in All Inclusive holidays, and its Platinum Plan really allows you to think very little about additional expenses on the island. Besides the main meals, the programme includes drinks, à la carte dinners, minibar replenishment and some excursions. The restaurant selection is strong: the main Lily Maa with themed dinners, Tamarind with Indian and Thai cuisine, and Teppanyaki over the water. For a special occasion, you can order dinner on the beach.

The resort suits both couples and families. There are beach and overwater villas, a large shared pool, a separate family pool, a kids' club and a spa. The house reef is very close to the island. There are also good opportunities for diving and whale shark trips.

In the Maldives, staying with children in an overwater villa can be difficult because of safety restrictions. At Machchafushi, this issue is addressed with a separate Family Overwater Villa category, where the terrace above the water is designed with the safety of younger guests in mind. For families who prefer to stay on the beach, there are two-bedroom beach villas with a private pool.

The resort has a kids' club, and teenagers have a separate area with games and consoles. The dining is very varied - six restaurants and bars, including the Thai Suan Bua and Italian Mare Azzurro.
