Maafushi in the Maldives: holidays, best hotels, beaches and excursions

If you dream of seeing the Maldives but are not ready to spend several thousand dollars on a resort, Maafushi is one of the best options. This is where the history of budget tourism in the Maldives began. Today the island offers dozens of guesthouses, good beaches, excursions to see sharks and manta rays, diving and the opportunity to visit luxury resorts with a Day Pass.

Why you should go to Maafushi and where to start discovering this local island in the Maldives - read on in our guide.

Is Maafushi worth visiting?

In short - yes! Maafushi has changed a lot in recent years. The small island has turned into a full-fledged tourist destination with dozens of modern guesthouses and hotels, restaurants, dive centres, excursion offices and its own beach for tourists. At the same time, prices here remain several times lower than on resort islands.

In terms of the variety of excursions and water activities, Maafushi can compete with many resort islands. Boats leave from here every day for snorkelling trips to coral reefs, excursions to nurse sharks, manta rays and dolphins, fishing trips, sandbanks and neighbouring resorts.

Advantages of a holiday on Maafushi

  • affordable accommodation prices compared with resorts;
  • convenient transfer from Malé Airport without domestic flights;
  • a large choice of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants;
  • dozens of excursions almost every day;
  • good opportunities for diving and snorkelling;
  • the opportunity to visit luxury hotels with a Day Pass;
  • well-developed tourist infrastructure for a local island.

Disadvantages worth knowing about in advance

The main drawback of Maafushi is not the absence of luxury villas, but expectations. If you imagine a completely secluded island with empty beaches and a personal butler, it is better to choose a classic resort straight away. In addition, Muslim traditions apply on the island. You can swim in revealing swimwear only on the specially designated bikini beach, alcohol is officially prohibited on the island, and it can be quite crowded during the high season.

Maafushi's house reef also cannot be called one of the best in the Maldives, so travellers usually go on excursions for truly impressive snorkelling. This is why Maafushi is more often chosen by active travellers who want to see as much as possible in one trip rather than spend a whole week only on the grounds of one hotel.

Who is a holiday on Maafushi suitable for?

  1. If you are flying to the Maldives for the first time. Maafushi lets you discover the country without huge expenses and understand how much this type of holiday suits you.
  2. Couples and honeymooners. Despite the lively atmosphere, it is easy to organise a romantic dinner on the beach, take a trip to a sandbank or spend a day at one of the neighbouring luxury resorts.
  3. Active travellers. If you find it difficult to lie on the same beach all week, you can choose excursions, go diving, snorkelling or fishing.
  4. Families with children. Thanks to the short transfer, calm tourist beach and large choice of family hotels, Maafushi is a good option for a holiday with children. The main thing is to choose a hotel near the tourist beach in advance and keep in mind that there are fewer activities for young children here than at large family resorts.

Where is Maafushi and how to get there from Malé Airport

Maafushi is located in Kaafu Atoll (South Malé) about 26 kilometres from Velana International Airport. Thanks to its proximity to the capital, Malé, the island has become one of the country's most popular local destinations. Unlike many other islands, there is no need to take a domestic flight or wait for a seaplane. Just 30-45 minutes after leaving Malé, you can be on the beach.

  • Speedboat. Most travellers choose the regular speedboat. This is the most convenient way to reach the island without unnecessary connections. Services operate daily with several carriers, and many hotels book seats for their guests themselves.
  • Public ferry. The cheapest way to reach the island is the public ferry. It costs much less than a speedboat, but runs far less frequently and takes almost twice as long. The timetable also depends on the day of the week, and changes are possible on Fridays because of the day off.
  • Private transfer. For a more comfortable journey, a private boat can be a good option. It takes guests directly to the island without waiting for other passengers. The cost of such a transfer is significantly higher.

When, where and how it is more convenient to travel - in our guide to transfers in the Maldives.

Tip: before booking, be sure to check the current boat timetable with your hotel. It can change depending on the season, and some hotels offer their own transfers that do not appear in the general schedule.

Maafushi beaches

The island's main tourist beach is Bikini Beach. Only on this part of the coast is it permitted to sunbathe and swim in revealing swimwear. The best hotels, cafés and excursion centres are nearby, so this part of the island is most often chosen for accommodation.

The beach is not as spacious and secluded as on resort islands, but the water is clean, the entry into the ocean is gentle, and the light coral sand is pleasant for relaxing. At low tide, pieces of coral can be found in places, so it is worth bringing reef shoes for swimming and walking in shallow water.

For the atmosphere of secluded Maldives, you can take an excursion to sandbanks or neighbouring uninhabited islands. For everyday relaxation, however, Maafushi's bikini beach is quite comfortable.

When to holiday on Maafushi

Maafushi welcomes tourists all year round, but the best time for a holiday is considered to be from November to April. During this period, the Maldives has its dry season: there is less rainfall, the sea is more often calm, and there are significantly more sunny days. For the best snorkelling and successful excursions, choose the calmer period from January to April.

Where is the best place to stay on Maafushi?

Despite the island's small size, where you stay really affects your holiday experience. The difference between areas is only a few minutes on foot, but the atmosphere differs noticeably.

  • Bikini Beach area. Most of the modern hotels, cafés and excursion offices are concentrated here. The main tourist beach is literally a couple of minutes away on foot, and popular hotels and several good restaurants are nearby.
  • Central part of the island. The centre of Maafushi has more affordable guesthouses, shops and small family cafés. Bikini Beach is about a 10-minute walk away, but accommodation prices here are usually lower. It is suitable if you plan to spend most of your time on excursions and do not want to overpay for a beachfront location.
  • Area near the port. There are several modern hotels near the harbour. This is a convenient option for travellers who go snorkelling, diving or on boat trips almost every day. Keep in mind that there are more boats and tourists here during the day, so for peace and quiet it is better to choose the opposite side of the island.

Things to do on Maafushi

You definitely will not be bored on Maafushi. The main advantage of this local island is the experiences you get from trips. Many tourist boats depart regularly from here. On the island itself, you can choose jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing, banana boat rides or try parasailing. Most of these activities are available on the bikini beach or at local water sports centres.

Snorkelling

The island's house reef is quite modest, so most tourists choose boat excursions to nearby coral reefs. During such trips, you can see colourful tropical fish, sea turtles, rays and even small reef sharks.

Diving

Several certified PADI dive centres operate on the island, organising dives for both beginners and experienced divers. Dozens of well-known dive sites in South Malé Atoll are located near Maafushi, many of which are considered among the best in the Maldives.

Swimming with nurse sharks

One of the most popular excursions on Maafushi. Tourists travel to a place where friendly nurse sharks live permanently. Despite their impressive size, they are safe for people, so swimming next to them is considered one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.

Meeting manta rays

In certain months, majestic manta rays with wingspans of several metres can be seen near the atolls. This is one of the most beautiful excursions in the Maldives, although the chance of an encounter depends on the season and weather conditions.

Dolphin watching

Sunset trips in search of dolphins are very popular with families and couples. Boats usually depart closer to the evening, when the chance of encountering a pod is significantly higher.

Sandbanks

A trip to a small sandbank in the middle of the ocean is one of the most photogenic excursions. A few hours on a tiny island with white sand and turquoise water allow you to experience the atmosphere of the real Maldives and create incredible content for Instagram.

Sunset fishing

Traditional Maldivian fishing has remained popular for many years. The excursion usually takes place in the evening, and if you wish, the fish you catch can be cooked at one of the local restaurants.

Excursion to uninhabited islands

During such a trip, you can visit several small islands at once, swim in lagoons and spend a few hours away from tourist beaches.

Day Pass to resort islands

One of the main advantages of Maafushi is the opportunity to spend a day on a luxury resort island. Many resorts offer day programmes with transfers, access to beaches, pools and restaurants, and sometimes lunch included.

Where to eat on Maafushi

Maafushi does not have an All Inclusive system, but most hotels and guesthouses offer accommodation with breakfast, and many also offer Half Board (breakfast and dinner) or Full Board (three meals a day). The choice of cafés and restaurants is pleasantly surprising. You can find Maldivian cuisine as well as European, Italian, Indian and Asian dishes.

Most restaurants stay open until late in the evening, and many offer food delivery directly to the hotel. Prices are noticeably lower than at resorts. On average, a full lunch or dinner costs USD 10-20 per person, while a cup of coffee costs around USD 2-4. Many places serve fresh seafood, including tuna, reef fish, squid, prawns and octopus.

  • Symphony Lagoon. One of the best-known restaurants on Maafushi with a beautiful terrace by the water. The menu includes fresh fish dishes, pasta, steaks, pizza and traditional Maldivian cuisine. A good place for a romantic sunset dinner.
  • Octopus. A popular café with affordable prices and large portions. It serves burgers, pasta, pizza, seafood dishes and fresh juices. The place is popular.
  • Kaalamaa Restaurant. The restaurant specialises in Maldivian and Asian cuisine. It is worth trying tuna dishes, curries and local snacks. The atmosphere is calm, and the service traditionally receives good reviews from guests.
  • Fine Bake by Suzy. A small bakery and coffee shop that many people visit for breakfast or desserts. It serves fresh pastries, sandwiches, cakes, coffee and natural fruit smoothies.

Is there alcohol on Maafushi?

Maafushi is a local island where local residents live, so the sale of alcohol is prohibited under Maldivian law. However, there is an exception for tourists: special floating bars operate near the island, moored outside its territory. They can be reached by a small boat in just a few minutes. Alcoholic drinks can also be purchased during a Day Pass on resort islands, but you should not bring unconsumed purchases back to Maafushi.

Maafushi remains a leader among the local islands of the Maldives thanks to its developed infrastructure, wide choice of hotels and excursion programmes, so it is definitely worth visiting.
