Surfing in the Maldives: Waves You'll Fall in Love With

One of the most underrated aspects of the Maldives is its surfing potential. While many associate surfing with Bali or Hawaii, the Maldivian archipelago, stretching 750 kilometers across the Indian Ocean, offers an equally impressive and far more secluded experience.

A Brief History

Surfing arrived in the Maldives in the 1970s when Australian Tony Hussein Hinde, after a shipwreck, discovered dream waves. He stayed, converted to Islam, married locally, and dedicated his life to developing surfing in the islands. Since then, much has changed. Today, the Maldives boasts a well-developed surf infrastructure: specialized charter boats, surf schools at resorts, camps with instructors, and even "private waves" exclusive to guests of certain resorts.

Although the waves here are gentler than in Indonesia or Hawaii, during peak season they can reach up to 2 meters, making them suitable for both beginners and professionals.

Features of Surfing in the Maldives

The primary wave type is right- and left-hand reef breaks, formed where ocean swells meet coral reefs. Due to the coral bottom, it’s recommended to wear wetsuits or reef booties, even in warm water. Monitoring tides is crucial, as currents can carry you far from your starting point.

Surfing Season in the Maldives

The main surfing season in the Maldives runs from March to November, depending on the location. Monsoons influence conditions more than traditional seasons.

  • December to April: The northeast monsoon (Iruvai) brings the dry season, better suited for relaxed holidays, fishing, diving, and excursions.
  • March–April: Optimal conditions begin to form in the southern atolls.
  • Early May to late October: During the southwest monsoon (Hulhangu), humidity rises, and waves appear, with the northern and central atolls offering the best spots. Offshore winds dominate, and flat days are rare.
  • June–August: Wave heights range from 1 to 2.5 meters.
  • October–November: Good surfing conditions return to the southern atolls.

How to Get Between Spots

For surfing in the central and southern atolls, renting a boat or surf yacht is essential. This is the best way to hit multiple spots in one trip, especially for groups. Charters also provide access to remote waves. Some boats accommodate 6–12 people, complete with a chef, guide, and equipment onboard.

Book charters in advance - top boats sell out quickly during peak season.

Maldives Hotels for Surfers

Surfers aiming to conquer Maldivian waves have two main accommodation options: luxury resorts with their own surf schools or specialized surf camps.

Surfing at Resorts

Many Maldivian resorts feature surf schools on-site or nearby, making it highly convenient: no need to rent boats or travel far - waves, equipment, and instructors are readily available.

Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives (North Malé). Home to Atoll Adventures Surf School, the resort’s highlight is direct access to the legendary Pasta Point, renowned for its exceptional left-handers. Peak season is March to October. Other popular spots like Sultans, Honky’s, and Jailbreaks are just 10 minutes away by speedboat.

Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi (North Malé). Lohis Surf School serves both beginners and seasoned surfers. Located by the famous Lohi’s break, the resort offers a dedicated surf zone, beach villas, and Lohis Rooms just a 2-minute walk from the waves, along with tailored training packages. To ensure quality service and comfort, the resort limits surfers to 45 per day. Surf registration is only available when booking through a Surf Travel Agent, as surf passes are not sold separately. For variety, the school offers twice-daily surf-dhoni trips to other breaks in the area.

Niyama Private Islands Maldives (Dhaalu Atoll). This resort boasts direct beach access to the renowned Vodi break and proximity to other top spots. An on-site surf school operates year-round, and the resort frequently hosts sessions with world-class surfers, making it a magnet for wave enthusiasts.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa (North Malé). Guests enjoy a perfect blend of luxury and adventure. The Tropicsurf school is known for its premium service and personalized approach. Surf safaris to the region’s best breaks are offered by boat or even seaplane. Tropicsurf trains adults and children from age 6. For over a decade, the resort has hosted the prestigious Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy (SCT), drawing pro surfers worldwide.

Six Senses Laamu (Laamu Atoll). A key highlight is access to multiple waves, including the famous Yin Yang, one of the south’s best. Perfect for beginners and pros alike, Tropicsurf instructors provide lessons and board rentals. Beginners benefit from comfortable learning conditions right off the resort’s beaches. Ayada Maldives (Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll). Its proximity to iconic southern waves like Love Charms, Two Ways, and Tiger Stripes attracts confident riders seeking solitude and diverse spots.

Important: Surfing at resorts typically requires a special package or surf pass. Arriving with your own board isn’t enough—access to waves may be restricted. Confirm all conditions during booking to avoid surprises and ensure an ideal surf trip.

Surf Camps

Choosing the perfect surf camp depends on several factors: your skill level, preferred region (atoll), proximity to spots, and the age or number of participants.

Maldivian surf camps cater to all preferences: from intimate retreats for solo travelers to family-friendly programs, women-only camps, and options for kids of various ages. Camps typically offer accommodation, lessons with professional instructors, meals, and additional activities like snorkeling, gym and pool access, island excursions, and other resort perks.

Prices depend on the package, which may include board rentals and transfers to spots. Expect costs starting at around $320 for a 4-day (3-night) stay.

  • Board rental: $35–$45.
  • Private surf boat trips: from $510 for 3 hours; by speedboat, from $600.

At Camps. Many camp packages include board rentals and transfers to spots. Renting from local operators costs around $25–$30 per day or $145–$175 per week.
