The north coast of Mauritius is worth choosing if you prefer a beach holiday. The sea is calm, the infrastructure is very well developed, and there is truly a lot of entertainment here, unlike the southern coast, which is ideal for lovers of surfing, wild nature and seclusion. Rain comes less often to the beaches of northern Mauritius, and the winds are not as strong as in the south. In this article, we will tell you about the most interesting resorts in the north of Mauritius.

Grand Baie - the main resort in the north of Mauritius
Grand Baie can confidently be called the most popular resort in northern Mauritius. It is a lively, party-style place and suits those who love entertainment. As a rule, this resort is chosen by younger travellers. There is a big choice of restaurants, bars, water sports, shops and souvenir stores. There are also nightclubs, which usually operate on Fridays and Saturdays.
Beach
Grand Baie beach is a narrow strip of sand running along the road that curves around the bay. Sun loungers are available to rent on the beach, but it is important to remember that this is a bay and there can be quite a lot of yachts and boats there. If you are looking for untouched beaches with an open view of the ocean, it is better to choose the other beaches we will mention below. Also pay attention to the beaches in the western part of the bay. There are fewer boats there and the setting feels more beach-like. There are plenty of cafés with tables right by the shore.

How to get there
To walk around Grand Baie on foot, you will need about one to one and a half hours, depending on your pace and the route you choose. By car, it takes 5-10 minutes. The capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, is not far away, about 30 minutes by car. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is about an hour’s drive from Grand Baie.
Grand Baie hotels
There are many accommodation options in Grand Baie: small hotels, luxury resorts, and even apartments and guesthouses. Below, we share a selection of the very best hotels and resorts.
Royal Palm
A luxurious five-star hotel in the north-eastern part of Grand Baie. An excellent location on the beachfront with a well-kept beach and sun loungers. The resort has its own beach, three heated swimming pools, four à la carte restaurants available on breakfast and half board stays, a large choice of land and water sports, golf, and a spa centre. You can choose from one of the spacious suites, a penthouse or a private villa with a pool.

Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury
Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa

Trou aux Biches - a resort for holidays with children
Trou aux Biches is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. It fits perfectly into a family holiday. The beach has repeatedly received various tourism awards. Trou aux Biches is named after the village of the same name. It is less flashy and noisy than Grand Baie. It is quite peaceful here, and literally everything is created for a beach holiday.
Beach
The white-sand Trou aux Biches beach stretches for 2 kilometres along the former fishing village, which still preserves its charm. Above the sandy strip grow casuarina trees - evergreen trees. The entry into the water is gentle, which makes it excellent for children. Farther out there is a reef where you can go snorkelling. Trou aux Biches is also popular as one of the best places in Mauritius to watch sunsets. The water is clean and clear. There are marked swimming zones, and beyond them you may find sea urchins and coral on the seabed. It is an excellent choice for snorkelling.

How to get there
The Trou aux Biches resort is located slightly south of Grand Baie on the north-west coast, 15-20 minutes away by car. It is about 60 km from the airport.
Trou aux Biches hotels
A large number of hotels and resorts are located along the coastline. Most of them are family spa hotels with developed infrastructure. There are not as many restaurants and nightclubs here as in Grand Baie, but there are still places to go in the evening. Among the best hotel options in Trou aux Biches:
Trou Aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort
A hotel with luxurious villas and suites on the beachfront. The complex is very well maintained, with many palms and flowers - the landscaping is thoughtful and blends neatly into the surroundings. The property covers 35 hectares of gardens, and it is one of the first eco-oriented resorts in Mauritius. Guests have access to 6 à la carte restaurants, a kids’ club for children aged 1 to 17, a diving centre with equipment rental and a diving school, a fitness centre and other beach entertainment, water sports, a spa centre with 20 treatment rooms, wedding ceremony arrangements, a large shared swimming pool, and a golf course. The villa choice is excellent - there are even multi-bedroom villas with private pools.

Trou Aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort
Le Cardinal Exclusive Resort
A small resort with only 13 suites. If you are looking for peace and seclusion, this is the hotel for you. It is located right on the beachfront, literally by the sea. The panoramic windows of your room will face the legendary Trou aux Biches beach. The hotel has two restaurants and a bar, an outdoor swimming pool, the possibility to play golf, a diving centre, water activities, a spa, a tennis court, a fitness room and more.

Mont Choisy - the best public beach in Mauritius
Mont Choisy, together with Trou aux Biches, is considered one of the best beaches in Mauritius. Both are suitable for holidays with children. However, Mont Choisy is a little different. For the most part, it is a public beach, while resort hotels are located slightly farther away. Mont Choisy is also situated in a small bay, which makes its waters calmer and more predictable.
Beach
Mont Choisy beach is characterised by fine white sand. It stretches for three kilometres and is one of the longest on the whole island. The water here is clean and clear, and the entry into the sea is gentle. Behind the beach, along the coastline, there is a true garden of casuarina trees where you can hide from the sun. There is the necessary infrastructure for comfort. There are also many cafés, snack bars and water sports offers. Mont Choisy is often visited by local residents.

How to get there
Mont Choisy is located slightly north of Trou aux Biches. In fact, one flows into the other. In general, it is quite possible to walk from Grand Baie, then through Mont Choisy and all the way to Trou aux Biches. This will take several hours. You can get to Mont Choisy from the airport in about 1 hour by car.
Mont Choisy hotels
There are no hotel complexes directly on Mont Choisy beach. They are located slightly farther inland. Most likely, this is also one of the reasons why the beach is so popular with locals. Most hotels are located in the northern and southern parts of the long beach.
Canonnier Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa
A family 4-star resort with one of the most interesting spas on the island, built among the branches of a banyan tree. The resort is located in a tropical garden covering about 7 hectares. Guests also have access to a kids’ club for children aged 3 to 11, the opportunity to visit a large golf course, various water sports, three restaurants and a bar, a diving centre, tennis courts and many other activities.

Mystik Life Style
Located in the southern part of Mont Choisy. This is a small budget boutique hotel with only 35 rooms. It has a cosy dining area on the balcony with beautiful sunset views. The place is budget-friendly, but very beautiful. The infrastructure includes a panoramic outdoor swimming pool and a bar-restaurant. Mystik Life Style offers several meal plan types to choose from at booking, its own beach area, a massage room, water sports and more.

La Cuvette - the best beach in northern Mauritius
In fact, it is quite difficult to single out the very best beach on the north coast. Even so, in our opinion, the most interesting, clean and cosy one is the small beach in La Cuvette Bay. It is often less crowded compared to other coastal areas.
Beach
The sand is white, fine and soft. The entry into the water is ideal - from shallow water to depth. The beach itself is very small, and stone boulders frame it on the sides. It is a small bay with an excellent sandy seabed. Trees grow along the shore, where you can hide from the sun. Nearby there is well-developed beach infrastructure.
How to get there
La Cuvette is located in the north-eastern part of Grand Baie. You can walk from one beach to the other in about half an hour at a relaxed pace.
La Cuvette hotels
There are almost no hotels directly on La Cuvette beach. Perhaps this is also one of the reasons why this beach is so appealing. However, the luxurious Royal Palm, which we described in more detail above, is located very close by. In general, the hotel has a great location for combining several beaches and covering a large part of the island’s northern coast.

Pereybere - a picturesque public beach
It is also worth mentioning another excellent beach in northern Mauritius - Pereybere. It is located about 10 minutes from La Cuvette. Here too you will find a gentle entry into the water, soft white sand, casuarina tree gardens and good beach infrastructure. There are cafés, snack bars, toilets, showers and so on. Pereybere is often chosen by families with children. The seabed is sandy, without rocks or sea urchins. The water is also clear enough for snorkelling. It is a great place to relax, but there are almost no large resort complexes along this stretch of coast, only small hotels.
