Nyepi is a deeply spiritual and cultural holiday, a day of introspection celebrated by Hindus. Unlike the rest of Indonesia, about 87% of Bali’s population is Hindu. Therefore, holidays on the island of the gods are different from the rest of Indonesia. This day has an incredible significance for Balinese Hindus. According to Bali traditions, Nyepi symbolizes balance and harmony, reminds of the constant battle between good and evil. Residents believe that on the eve of the holiday the island should be cleansed of evil spirits.

Meditate, Pray, Be Silent: How and When to Celebrate Nyepi
According to ancient legends, Aji Saka, the first Javanese king, brought a unique calendar from India, which was officially adopted in 78 AD. This calendar determines the date of a special holiday - Nyepi. It is celebrated on the first day after the new moon following the vernal equinox. And the date usually falls on March. For example, according to the Balinese calendar in 2025, Nyepi officially fell on March 29. The holiday lasts a day: begins at 6 am ends at 6 am the next day. However, the celebration of Nyepi can hardly be called a holiday in the usual sense. As soon as the morning comes, the island falls silent: it is customary to pray, meditate and remain silent, immerse yourself and reflect on the past year.
New Year in Bali is celebrated in several stages. Bhuta Yajna is a series of rituals preceding the New Year. And the days before Nyepi are quite noisy, unlike the New Year celebration itself.
- Three days before the Balinese New Year, the Melasty ceremony is held. Although the exact date of the festival each community sets independently. On this day, on the coast of the sea, at sacred springs, rivers and lakes, you can see the processions of Balinese in white robes, carrying decorated bamboo poles and umbrellas. They perform a ritual of purification using the water of the sea and holy springs. I agree. Water contains the essence of eternal life. Melasty’s goal is to purify not only the human body and soul, but the entire universe from evil, negative thoughts and actions. It is customary to give gifts to the gods, sending them in boats directly into the ocean. The participants of the ceremony pray, turning to the sea. Ocean water sprinkles all present.
- On the eve of Nyepi, a bright and noisy ritual Makaru is held. It helps bring harmony to the island. On this day, at the crossroads, mats are spread out on which Balinese pray. In the villages, animals, birds and fruits of the harvest are sacrificed. Rice is laid out around the house, and a kentongan made of bamboo is beaten into the drum. This ceremony symbolizes the expulsion of Bhut Kala, the negative energy.
- Ceremony MehThe punishment is accompanied by a parade of Wow-oh, during which giant mythical creatures are displayed on the streets to scare away evil spirits. A parade of giant statues of demons and evil spirits begins in the evening. Balinese people walk the streets with these figures, and dance with them, trying to confuse evil spirits. Noise, gam and torches in the hands of the marchers are designed to scare away demons from houses. Sometimes the figures are burned after the parade. Huge and frightening dolls are created from papier-mache. This is done by young people and is considered a good way to give a little money to children, because they buy materials for dolls themselves.
- Omed Omedan is a unique kissing festival held in the village of Kaja Sesetan in Bali. During the festival, young people aged 17 to 30 kiss in front of everyone under the spray of water. It is believed that this ritual strengthens ties between the youth of the village.
