  4. Omadhoo Island in the Maldives: how to get there, hotels and guesthouses, entertainment

Omadhoo is a local island in the Maldives, the main advantage of which is its pristine tropical beauty. It is a small and very quiet island village. Locals are engaged in fishing or run small shops. Omadhoo is suitable for a budget holiday. There is practically no tourist infrastructure here, but there is a real Maldives, both in natural manifestation and in original culture.

General characteristics of the island of Omadhoo:

  • Population: about 1000 people
  • Length: 1500 m
  • Width: 350 m
  • Atoll: Alif Daal (South Ari)
  • Other names: Omado
  • Distance from Male: 75 km

How to get to Omadhoo

There are several ways to get to Omadhoo Island from Velana International Airport.

By public speed boat. Runs daily, except Friday. The journey takes 1 hour 20 minutes and costs about $ 25 one way. In order to accurately get on your boat, it is better to agree in advance on booking a ticket. In such matters, the owners of the guesthouses usually help.

By ferry with a transfer.

  • Male - Mahibadhoo - 4.5 hours.
  • Mahibadhoo - Omadhoo - 15 minutes.

The ferry leaves Male on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:00. In the opposite direction (Omadhoo Male) - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 10:00. One way trip costs about $ 7.

Omadhoo Island hotels and guesthouses

There are not many guest houses and hotels on the island. More precisely, there are no more than a dozen of them, half of which were discovered quite recently. If we take the bikini beach as a reference point, the distance to it from all guest houses is about the same. So the choice is worth making based on your preferred conditions.

  • Nemo Inn. A comfortable hotel with a homely atmosphere, delicious food and clean rooms. Continental or Maldivian breakfast included. The rooftop restaurant offers spectacular views. The number of rooms consists of standard double apartments with a sea view. Guided tours can be purchased at the hotel.
  • Hudhuvelimaldives. One of the popular guest houses in Omadhoo. The guests appreciated the conditions of stay and the hospitality of the hosts. Spacious rooms with cozy interiors, modern bathroom, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and a private terrace. You can choose breakfast buffet or à la carte. Extra beds are available for families. Daily cleaning and room service.
  • Green Leaf. Cozy guest house surrounded by a tropical garden. Double or twin beds available upon request. A la carte breakfast is included in the price.
  • Noomuraka Inn. This inn has its own garden, shared lounge and private beach area. Cozy rooms are suitable for relaxation for two and a family location. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the guesthouse. Guests celebrate decent breakfasts and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Kuri Beach View Inn. A few steps from the bikini beach there is a small guest house with comfortable rooms. Cozy private courtyard, free bike rental for exploring the island. Maldivian cuisine for breakfast and BBQ supplies. Arrangement of airport transfers, snorkeling excursions and diving trips.
  • Turtle Maldives. A popular guest house on Omadhoo, appreciated for its delicious breakfasts, great location, clean rooms and free snorkeling equipment rental.
  • Kuri Inn. Simple and comfortable rooms with a bedroom, bathroom and seating area. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, minibars and small refrigerators. Hearty continental breakfasts, spacious courtyard, homely atmosphere.

The tourism infrastructure on Omadhoo is still in its infancy. There are several small cafes on the island. Therefore, for a holiday on the island, choose a guest house where you can order good meals. You can still have a snack in a small local cafe. The menu usually consists of Maldivian dishes, mainly fish, rice and local fruits.

Entertainment on the island

In terms of tourism, Omadhoo is a true island exotic. The Maldives are truly Muslim here, so do not expect to find entertainment centers and establishments on the island. Omadhoo is suitable for an authentic holiday, enjoying the surrounding nature and the underwater world.

In this regard, Omadhoo is a real exception. Clean and white beaches, which are rarely found on local islands, are covered with dense tropics. A stunningly beautiful sandbar on the western side of the island.

Not far from the spit, the only bikini beach on Omadhoo is equipped with sun loungers. Don't forget about strict Muslim restrictions. If you want to soak up a beach other than the tourist beach, you can only do it in T-shirts and shorts.

Snorkeling and diving

The Omadhoo House Reef is the main subject of exploration during your holiday on the island.

Snorkeling. For spectacular snorkeling, you don't need to book a tour. Just about a hundred meters from the coast - and you will see a rich underwater world with colorful fish of all varieties. There are even manta rays and several shark species. It is preferable to snorkel on the western side of the island, where there is a convenient passage to the reef.

Diving. Omadhoo Dive Center PADI is open on the island, where you can take basic diving courses.

Renting equipment for self-guided diving on the house reef will cost $ 50 for two. The cost of diving with an instructor at the edge of the reef is about $ 70 per dive + $ 20 for equipment rental. More distant diving at the famous Maldivian dive sites Omadhoo Thila, Manta Point, Maamigili Kandu will cost $ 120.

In addition to scuba diving, ocean fishing trips are available on Omadhoo, which will bring a lot of impressions.

Island tours

If you don't feel like sitting still, you can explore the equally beautiful neighboring islands. For example, the small village of Hangnaameedhoo, where only 500 islanders live. On small deserted islands near Omadhoo, you can go for a picnic or overnight with a tent.

You can also book an excursion trip to the nearest private resorts that are open to the public - Lily Beach Resort and Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives. A visit to the underwater restaurant at \ Resort will be an unforgettable experience. It is imperative to book a table in advance.
