  4. Visa to Indonesia: what documents are needed to visit

Indonesia is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, a scattering of almost 20 thousand islands! A year is not enough to explore all corners! Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. It is located on the northwest coast of Java. But travelers prefer other islands during their trips, especially Bali and Lombok. However, it would be unwise to limit your stay in Indonesia to Bali. Other Indonesian islands worth visiting are: Sumatra, Sulawesi, Flores or the Lesser Sunda Islands... Beautiful sandy beaches, exotic nature, authentic culture - there is something for everyone.

But at the same time, quite strict visa rules apply in Indonesia, which you need to know before you go in search of the exotic.

To visit Bali you can use either a tourist or a business visa. Both types of visas allow entry into Indonesia. For example, you can fly directly to Bali, Jakarta, Manado, Surabaya and Riau. Destination airports: Denpasar Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK), Manado (MDC), Surabaya (SUB), Penang (TNJ) or Batam (BTH).

Visa to Indonesia for a month

If you stay in Bali for less than a month, you can get a visa on arrival. The initial visa on arrival allows you to stay in Indonesia for 30 days.

This is a single entry visa, you can only enter the country once. But you can extend it for another month. To receive it upon arrival, you will need:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months.
  • Departure ticket.

Ask about a visa at the airport at the counter located directly in front of the immigration office. You must pay in cash. Prepare the amount in rupees or dollars. Payment in euros is possible, but the exchange rate is not very favorable and you may not be given change.

Business visa B211 (up to 180 days)

If you plan to stay in the country for more than 60 days, you can apply for a B211 visa. When applied for from abroad, this visa is referred to as an offshore B211. When applying for a visa from the territory of Indonesia, it is called an onshore B211 visa.

The visa is single entry. As soon as you leave the territory of Indonesia, it "burns out".

Initially, B211A allows you to stay in Indonesia for 60 days. From the moment the visa is issued, you have 90 days to enter Indonesia. Further it can be extended to a total of 180 days.

Documents for applying for a business visa B211:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months (12 months if renewed).
  • Return ticket.
  • sponsorship letter.
  • Three recent bank statements (ideally over €1,500 or equivalent).
  • Certificates of vaccination against coronavirus in English.
  • Passport photo.
  • Return plane ticket.

The administration fee for this visa is 95 euros. However, you must provide, among other things, a letter from the sponsor/guarantor. Therefore, applying through an agency to obtain this visa is practically necessary, which is why they charge extra money. On average, the cost of a visa issued for 60 days: $250 - $350 depending on the speed of processing. Beware of scammers who can send you a fake permit.

  • The B211 visa can be extended twice. Thus, with this visa, you can stay in Indonesia for up to 180 days.
  • Your visa on arrival cannot be converted to another visa.
  • To extend your B211 visa, it is best to apply two weeks before your last permitted day in Indonesia. You will need to contact the sponsor: the renewal is linked to the original guarantor.
  • You will need to appear at least once (three times if you renew your visa yourself and not through an agency) at the immigration office to be fingerprinted.
  • Please note that you cannot apply for a B211 visa immediately after it expires. First you will have to leave the country.

Many digital nomads use this visa to stay in Bali for several months or even several years, but this is only allowed on the condition that they do not work with Indonesian companies. It is strictly forbidden to work in Indonesia with a B211 visa. This entails very severe fines and likely deportation.

With this visa, you are still a tourist: for example, you cannot open a bank account, get a driver's license, or even take advantage of the Indonesian healthcare system. And when leaving the country, the visa ceases to be valid.

Only KITAS or KITAP resident visas allow you to enter and exit Indonesia as you wish.

Penalty for violating visa laws

From 2019, for overstaying without a visa, you will have to pay a fine of 1,000,000 rupees (62 euros) per day for the first 60 days of overstay.

If you remain without a visa for more than 60 days, you can run into deportation and end up on the blacklist. Overstaying beyond 60 days is a criminal violation. It is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
