It is warm here all year round. On average, the temperature changes slightly throughout the year: from 29°C (July) to 32°C (March). And the water in the ocean is pleasant at any time of the year!

Polynesia has two seasons: the southern winter, which corresponds to the dry season, from April to October, and the rainy season, from November to March, with heavy and regular rainfall, and often strong winds.

  • The rainy season is characterized by higher temperatures, frequent and short-term showers. The rainiest months are December and January. During this period, tropical cyclones can form, and wind speeds can reach 220 km/h. The daytime temperature fluctuates between 31°C and 32°C, and at night it drops to 24°C. The winter season can be humid, sometimes hard to breathe. During the day the sun prevails, but sometimes intense short-term rains can begin.
  • The dry season is characterized by insignificant precipitation and very pleasant temperatures, fluctuating between + 22°C and +30°C from May to October. It is in July-August that the temperature is the coolest (from 24 to 28 degrees).

Due to the vast territory of Polynesia with different latitudes, different archipelagos can have their own climatic features. Therefore, the weather in Tahiti can differ from other islands of Polynesia. For example, the Marquesas Islands are characterized by a drier climate compared to other islands. And on the Gambier Islands and the Australis Islands, the southernmost archipelagos, the temperatures are cooler, precipitation is more frequent, and the wind is stronger. The presence of trade winds and the ocean allows the climate of Polynesia to be relatively moderate. Cyclones caused by the El Niño phenomenon are not uncommon in Polynesia.

Climate of Tahiti

You can enjoy Tahiti to the fullest during the dry season, during the southern winter from mid-April to October. This period is most recommended for traveling to Polynesia, as rainfall is minimal and the atmosphere is more comfortable than in the summer.

  • The average temperature ranges from +27 to +24 degrees. In Papeete, August is the least hot month with an average temperature of 20 to 28°C.
  • The water temperature in the lagoon is within 23-26°C throughout the year. On the islands of Tahiti, the sea temperature ranges from 25°C in August to 28°C in February-March.
  • In Papeete, the capital of Polynesia, the sun shines on average from 6 hours a day in December to 8 hours a day in April, August and September.

In the summer season, which falls from December to February, daytime temperatures can rise to 32°C, and at night it drops to a minimum of 20°C. It often rains at this time. But the tropical climate makes Tahiti a favorite place where rain rarely occurs, unlike some islands of the archipelago, such as the Marquesas or Moorea.

However, in Papeete, January is the rainiest month, it can rain 15 days a month! The coolest months, July and August, are accompanied by winds from the southeast.

Avoid the period from November to February due to high temperatures and constant humidity.
