Mauritius's two seasons: hot summer and mild winter

Mauritius has a tropical climate, meaning it avoids extreme heat and cold. However, since the island is in the Southern Hemisphere, there are only two seasons, not the classic four:

  1. Southern summer: from November to April - hot, humid and juicy!
  2. Southern winter: from May to October - dry, sunny and comfortable!

Summer in Mauritius

  • Weather. This is the hottest period. Daytime temperatures remain stable at 28°C to 33°C, and in the north and west can reach 35°C. Ocean water temperatures range from 27°C to 28°C. Humidity is high.
  • Precipitation. Get ready for the rainy season. But don't be alarmed! These aren't usually prolonged drizzles, but rather powerful but short tropical downpours, most often occurring in the afternoon or at night. They refresh the air, and afterward, the sun comes out again.
  • Cyclones. The highest risk of cyclones occurs in January and February. Full-blown hurricanes are rare, but the island is well prepared. Hotels have clear instructions, and authorities issue advance warnings of approaching storms.

This is the season for those who want to see the island at its most lush, emerald, with its full-flowing waterfalls. It's also the best time for diving, as visibility underwater is at its best.

Winter in Mauritius

  • Weather. It's the island's peak season. Temperatures are milder and more comfortable, averaging 22°C to 26°C. Humidity is significantly lower, making breathing easier. Evenings, especially in July and August, can be cool (down to 16°C in central parts), so a pullover or sweater is definitely a good idea. The ocean water is slightly cooler, 23°C to 25°C, but still very pleasant for swimming.
  • Precipitation. There is very little rain, the sky is mostly clear and blue.
  • Trade winds. From June to August, trade winds blow steadily, especially on the east and south coasts. This can create waves and make beach activities less comfortable.

The Mauritian winter is perfect for those who don't tolerate heat and humidity well. It's also the perfect time for active travelers, including hiking, excursions, and city walks. It's also the perfect time for surfing, kitesurfing, and whale watching.

Climate characteristics of Mauritius by region

Despite the island's small size, the weather in different parts can vary significantly:

North and West (Grand Bay, Flic-en-Flac, Le Morne). These are the sunniest and most sheltered regions. The central mountains act as a barrier, keeping out rain clouds and strong winds. It's almost always a couple of degrees warmer and drier here than other parts of the island. Choose these regions if your main goal is a beach holiday, especially in the winter season (May-October).

East and South (Belle Mare, Blue Bay). The coasts here are exposed to the trade winds, making it windier and slightly cooler, especially from June to August. In summer, a breeze brings freshness. Some of the most beautiful beaches and luxury hotels are located here, but be prepared for wind.

The central part (Curepipe, plateau). Here, the temperature is always 3-5 degrees cooler and there is significantly more rain than on the coast. This is why everything is immersed in the vibrant greenery of dense forests and tea plantations.

What to do in Mauritius during different seasons

Surfing. The best surfing conditions are from June to August. The famous Tamarin Bay on the west coast produces excellent waves.

Diving and snorkeling. Underwater adventures are best planned for October-December and March-April, when the water is warmest and visibility is excellent. The dive sites of Le Morne and the west coast will introduce you to pristine coral reefs and abundant marine life.

Sailing and cruising are best from May to October, when the weather is stable and predictable. The risk of tropical storms is minimal, so you can enjoy your sea voyage without worrying about the weather.

Hiking peaks from May to October. The trails of the famous Le Morne Brabant Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are more suitable for traversing in the southern winter. This is the time to visit the Black River Gorges National Park, with its majestic waterfalls and endemic vegetation. Photographers will especially appreciate the period from October to January, when they can capture the blooming of numerous tropical plants.

Golf. Thanks to the tropical climate, golf can be played year-round, but the best conditions are from May to October. Golf courses are often located by the sea, where you can enjoy the sea breeze. However, in the east, September-November or March-April are more suitable for this purpose.

Relaxation and wellness. Spas and wellness centers welcome visitors year-round, but an outdoor massage with an ocean view is best reserved for the dry season.

Ecotourism. Birdwatching and exploring Mauritius' flora are best from May to October, as humidity and temperatures are lower. Visit nature reserves, such as Ile d'Aigrette and the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

Cultural Experience. Visiting local markets and immersing yourself in Mauritian culture is possible at any time of year, but morning walks to the Port Louis market or fishing villages are more enjoyable in moderate temperatures.
