Denpasar city: all about the capital of Bali

Denpasar is the capital of Bali and the largest city in the region. Most tourists pass through it on the way from the airport to the beach resorts, but in fact Denpasar can tell you a lot about the real life of the island. It is a city of markets, temples, museums and everyday Balinese traditions that rarely make it onto resort postcards.

If you want to see Bali not only through the lens of beaches and hotels, Denpasar is a great chance to look at the island in a deeper and more conscious way.

Denpasar in numbers and facts

  • The city is located in the southern part of Bali and is the administrative and economic centre of the province. This is where the authorities, universities, museums, large markets and transport hubs are located.
  • Ngurah Rai International Airport is located about 15 kilometres from the city centre, so almost every tourist ends up near Denpasar, even if they do not plan to visit it.
  • The name of the city comes from the words "den", meaning north, and "pasar", meaning market, which reflects its historical role as the island’s trading and public centre.
  • The history of Denpasar is closely connected with the Kingdom of Badung, which existed here until the beginning of the 20th century.
  • Denpasar officially received capital status in 1958. Since then, the city has been actively developing while remaining a guardian of traditional culture, religion and the Balinese way of life.

What to see in Denpasar

Tourists visit Denpasar to understand how local people live, see traditional temples and museums, walk through markets and feel the real rhythm of a Balinese city. Walking through the districts of Denpasar is already an experience in itself. Small temples, offerings by houses, schoolchildren in uniform, family shops and warungs give you the chance to see everyday Bali outside the tourist areas.

We suggest getting to know the main sights of Denpasar that are worth including in your itinerary.

Puputan Badung Square

A historic square and a symbol of Denpasar. It is not only a tourist sight, but also an important place for local residents. People come here to walk, relax, exercise and meet in the evenings. During your walk, it is also worth paying attention to Agung Jagatnatha Temple, which is a place of worship for Hindus.

Bali Museum

One of the best museums on the island for a first introduction to the history and culture of Bali. It is convenient to combine a visit here with a walk around central Puputan Square. The museum contains archaeological finds, household items, traditional costumes, ritual masks and works of art.

Taman Werdhi Budaya Art Centre

A cultural centre where exhibitions, performances, concerts and festivals take place. This is where the Bali Arts Festival is held every year - one of the island’s main cultural events. Even outside the festival season, you can often catch dance rehearsals or music performances here.

Pasar Badung and Pasar Kumbasari

The largest markets in the city, located not far from each other. Here you can see the true trading life of Bali: fresh fruit, spices, flowers for offerings, fabrics, souvenirs and products made by local craftsmen. In the evening, the open area near Badung Market changes completely: after 18:00, a lively night market unfolds here. Near the parking area, rows of stalls appear where you can try traditional street snacks.

By the way, Denpasar has many places where you can taste real Balinese cuisine: from street warungs to small family cafés. At the same time, markets and small snack places often turn out to be more interesting than tourist restaurants. It is better to have cash with you at markets and in warungs.

Le Mayeur Museum

A small but atmospheric museum in the Sanur area, dedicated to the Belgian artist Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, who lived and worked in Bali. It is a good option if you want to combine culture with a walk by the sea.

In addition to museums, markets and temples, guests of Denpasar can also visit:

  • Duta Orchid Garden. A compact but beautiful garden with a collection of orchids and tropical plants.
  • Shops and workshops producing batik, silver jewellery and traditional ceramics, where you can not only buy a souvenir but also watch the production process.
  • Small contemporary art galleries with works by local painters, sculptors and photographers.
  • Culinary masterclasses on preparing traditional dishes, offered by some restaurants and cafés.
  • Yoga and meditation studios, where you can try morning or evening sessions in a calm atmosphere.
  • Street events that are periodically held on Puputan Square.

Transport in Denpasar

Denpasar is a city with heavy traffic, so you should be ready for congestion, especially during rush hours. The most convenient way to get around is by using Grab and Gojek apps, which offer both motorbike taxis (ojek) and cars. They provide moderate prices and a high level of safety. In addition to these services, Bluebird Taxi also has a good reputation and offers a convenient app and comfortable passenger transport.

How to get around the city:

  • Taxis and ride-hailing. The most convenient way to move around is with Grab and Gojek. They work reliably, allow you to see the fare in advance, and are suitable both for short routes within the city and for transfers to Sanur, Ubud, Kuta or the airport.
  • Motorbike taxi (ojek). A great option if you need to get somewhere quickly over a short distance and avoid traffic. Especially relevant during rush hour. Always use a helmet for motorbike rides.
  • Car or scooter rental. This suits experienced drivers. Traffic in Denpasar is dense, with a large number of motorbikes and intersections without clear markings. If you are not confident in your skills, it is better to choose other ways of moving around.

When planning routes, it is better to allow extra time, especially if you are heading to the airport or on an excursion.

These accommodation options are especially convenient for those planning to stay directly in the city or near the airport. As an alternative to Denpasar, you can consider Sanur - a calm coastal area. It is conveniently located near the capital and the airport, and the hotel choice there is quite varied. For example:

  • Parigata Resorts and Spa. A 4-star hotel 15 minutes from central Denpasar and within walking distance of the beach. The hotel offers a calm stay and has an outdoor pool, restaurant, free internet and parking.
  • Griya Santrian A Beach Resort & Spa. A 4-star resort hotel on the beachfront. Guests are offered beautifully designed rooms, a wide choice of dishes, a pool and spa services.
  • Hyatt Regency Bali. A luxurious resort just steps from the beach. It offers comfortable rooms, varied dining, 3 pools and a wide range of entertainment.

Denpasar is not the most popular tourist stop in Bali, but it is exactly here that you can see the island without the tourist gloss. It is a city that helps you better understand Balinese culture, history and way of life.
