Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is hidden among the jungles and rice fields of Ubud. The resort seems to dissolve into the tropical valley of the Ayung River. Even the way to the lobby is unusual: guests cross a bridge above the treetops to a circular pond on the roof of the main building.

Capella Ubud is difficult to compare with an ordinary five-star resort. Only 23 luxury tents are set among the preserved forest of the Keliki Valley, designed in the style of 19th-century expedition camps. The concept continues beyond the rooms. In the evening, guests gather around the campfire, dishes at Api Jiwa restaurant are cooked over an open fire, and Auriga Wellness occupies separate spa tents among the greenery. The one-, two- or three-bedroom villas deserve special attention: each has a private pool and private relaxation space. The heart of the resort is the large WET pool, whose design is inspired by Balinese rice terraces. The main impression at Alila Villas Uluwatu comes from space and the ocean. The resort is built on the limestone plateau of the Bukit Peninsula, and the architecture seems to continue the line of the cliff: open terraces face the sea, the infinity pool visually merges with the horizon, and the famous lattice pavilions hang over the edge.

There are no ordinary hotel rooms here - only villas. Even the entry-level category offers 290 m² of space, a private pool and a separate cabana. Larger residences are designed for guests who value absolute privacy and the ability to relax almost independently of the rest of the resort. At Alila, luxury is not built around an abundance of decoration. Stone, wood, water, open spaces and ocean panoramas work far more effectively.

The Kayon Resort, Ubud

The Kayon Resort is interesting for its unusual location. The resort seems built into a steep green hillside: buildings are set on different levels, stairs and stone paths run between them, and the Petanu River flows below. The architecture uses plenty of local stone, carved wood and traditional Balinese details, so even this relatively small hotel feels very atmospheric.

For a more exclusive stay, choose a riverside villa. River Edge Pool Villa covers 90 m² and has its own terrace and infinity pool above the greenery. The interiors use bamboo, rattan, local stone and traditional Kamasan painting.

The Kayon is a good example of intimate Balinese luxury: without huge grounds or dozens of restaurants, but with privacy and the nature of Ubud.

At Jumeirah Bali, luxury is felt above all in the details and privacy. The resort resembles a modern palace whose architecture is inspired by Indonesian water temples. One of the resort's most unusual experiences is dinner in The Secret Cave, a natural cave illuminated by candles in the evening and reserved entirely for one couple. Quiet and luxurious Tanah Gajah is hidden among Ubud's rice fields and was once the private estate of renowned Indonesian architect and collector Hendra Hadiprana. The resort covers six hectares but offers only 24 suites and villas. The grounds are very peaceful.

One of Tanah Gajah's most unusual privileges is its own hot-air balloon. At sunrise or before sunset, it lifts guests up to 50 metres above the rice fields, revealing panoramic views of the Ubud area and, in clear weather, Mount Agung.

The ANVAYA Beach Resort occupies a rare location for Kuta - directly by the beach, while the area's main restaurants, shops and entertainment remain within walking distance. It is a large five-star resort, but for a more exclusive stay there are separate suites and villas with private pools, spacious terraces and access to the coast.
