Luxury hotels in Bali: 12 luxury resorts

Bali offers a wide choice of luxury hotels - from beachfront 5-star resorts in Nusa Dua and Uluwatu to intimate villas among the jungles of Ubud. The island's luxury segment includes Four Seasons, Raffles, Jumeirah, Capella, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Sofitel and other well-known hotel brands.

At the same time, the best hotels in Bali differ not only in their level of service. You can choose a villa with a private pool above the ocean, a resort among rice fields, a designer hotel in the jungle or a beach resort with a kids' club and extensive infrastructure. This selection includes 12 luxury hotels in Bali in different areas of the island.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Ubud

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is hidden among the jungles and rice fields of Ubud. The resort seems to dissolve into the tropical valley of the Ayung River. Even the way to the lobby is unusual: guests cross a bridge above the treetops to a circular pond on the roof of the main building.

The hotel has only 60 accommodation options - 18 suites and 42 villas. For the most secluded stay, choose a villa with a private pool surrounded by dense tropical greenery. Interiors with plenty of wood and natural materials continue the resort's nature-inspired concept.

A stay can be complemented by treatments at Sacred River Spa, yoga, walks among the rice fields or rafting on the Ayung River. A kids' club with a separate entertainment programme is available for children.

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Ubud

Mandapa was designed as a traditional Balinese village among rice fields and tropical greenery by the Ayung River. There is no feeling of a large chain hotel here: villas and suites are spread across the hillside, while rice terraces, gardens and Ubud's natural landscape remain all around.

For maximum privacy, choose villas with private pools. A stay can be complemented by Balinese rituals, spa programmes, walks in the surrounding area and dinner at Kubu restaurant, known for its individual bamboo cocoons by the river.

Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua, Nusa Dua

Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua is the kind of resort you never need to leave. The large grounds open directly onto Nusa Dua Beach, a lagoon pool stretches between the buildings, and some rooms have direct access to the water. For greater privacy, you can choose a suite with a small private pool or a spacious villa.

The hotel has 413 rooms in total, including 39 suites and villas. Sofitel's French aesthetic is complemented here by Balinese motifs - visible both in the interiors and in the design of the grounds. Three restaurants, two bars, SoSPA and Club Millésime are available to guests, while families have a children's pool and an entertainment club.

Capella Ubud, Ubud

Capella Ubud is difficult to compare with an ordinary five-star resort. Only 23 luxury tents are set among the preserved forest of the Keliki Valley, designed in the style of 19th-century expedition camps. Inside are antiques, copper baths and carefully considered interiors, while outside every tent has its own private pool.

The concept continues beyond the rooms. In the evening, guests gather around the campfire, dishes at Api Jiwa restaurant are cooked over an open fire, and Auriga Wellness occupies separate spa tents among the greenery. There is also The Cistern outdoor heated pool, a gym and programmes with yoga and walks.

W Bali, Seminyak

W Bali Seminyak is chosen for a completely different kind of luxury - bright, modern and a little bold. The resort is located directly by the ocean in one of Bali's most fashionable areas - Seminyak, making it easy to combine a five-star beach holiday with restaurants, shopping and nightlife.

The one-, two- or three-bedroom villas deserve special attention: each has a private pool and private relaxation space. The heart of the resort is the large WET pool, whose design is inspired by Balinese rice terraces. In the evening, the centre of attention shifts to oceanfront WooBar, while the 24-hour AWAY Spa is available for a more relaxing experience.

Alila Villas Uluwatu, Uluwatu

The main impression at Alila Villas Uluwatu comes from space and the ocean. The resort is built on the limestone plateau of the Bukit Peninsula, and the architecture seems to continue the line of the cliff: open terraces face the sea, the infinity pool visually merges with the horizon, and the famous lattice pavilions hang over the edge.

There are no ordinary hotel rooms here - only villas. Even the entry-level category offers 290 m² of space, a private pool and a separate cabana. Larger residences are designed for guests who value absolute privacy and the ability to relax almost independently of the rest of the resort. At Alila, luxury is not built around an abundance of decoration. Stone, wood, water, open spaces and ocean panoramas work far more effectively.

The Kayon Resort, Ubud

The Kayon Resort is interesting for its unusual location. The resort seems built into a steep green hillside: buildings are set on different levels, stairs and stone paths run between them, and the Petanu River flows below. The architecture uses plenty of local stone, carved wood and traditional Balinese details, so even this relatively small hotel feels very atmospheric.

For a more exclusive stay, choose a riverside villa. River Edge Pool Villa covers 90 m² and has its own terrace and infinity pool above the greenery. The interiors use bamboo, rattan, local stone and traditional Kamasan painting.

The Kayon is a good example of intimate Balinese luxury: without huge grounds or dozens of restaurants, but with privacy and the nature of Ubud.

Jumeirah Bali, Uluwatu

At Jumeirah Bali, luxury is felt above all in the details and privacy. The resort resembles a modern palace whose architecture is inspired by Indonesian water temples. Canals and pools run through the grounds, stone walls are hidden among the greenery, and the upper part of the resort offers panoramic ocean views.

The resort has 123 villas with private pools. You can stay among a tropical garden or choose a villa closer to the ocean. Spacious residences are available for families and groups, the largest of which covers around 1,600 m².

The dining deserves special attention. In addition to restaurants, Jumeirah Bali has Mantra - a private dining space hidden inside the cliff and reached by a glass lift.

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Seminyak

The Oberoi offers a format that is rare in modern Seminyak: instead of multi-storey buildings by the ocean, there are low-rise lanais and separate villas with thatched roofs. Even the simplest rooms have private terraces, while the villas offer considerably more personal space - enclosed courtyards, dining pavilions and garden or ocean views.

For example, the Royal Ocean View Villa covers 400 m². This villa has a separate living room, a private pool framed by frangipani and a pavilion for outdoor dining. There are also more intimate villas of 200-250 m² with ocean views. The luxury here is unlike the dramatic designer resorts of Uluwatu. The Oberoi focuses on privacy, space and classic Balinese aesthetics.

Raffles Bali, Jimbaran

Just 32 villas on a green hillside above Jimbaran Bay - Raffles Bali was designed from the start as an intimate resort where there is far more personal space than guests. Each villa has a private pool and terrace, and thanks to the hillside location many offer panoramic ocean views.

One of the resort's most unusual experiences is dinner in The Secret Cave, a natural cave illuminated by candles in the evening and reserved entirely for one couple. Rumari complements the dining experience with a modern interpretation of Indonesian cuisine, while spa treatments can be combined with yoga and wellness programmes.

Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana, Ubud

Quiet and luxurious Tanah Gajah is hidden among Ubud's rice fields and was once the private estate of renowned Indonesian architect and collector Hendra Hadiprana. Art remains part of everyday life here: the interiors and gardens are decorated with paintings, antiques and sculptures from the owner's personal collection. The resort covers six hectares but offers only 24 suites and villas. The grounds are very peaceful.

One of Tanah Gajah's most unusual privileges is its own hot-air balloon. At sunrise or before sunset, it lifts guests up to 50 metres above the rice fields, revealing panoramic views of the Ubud area and, in clear weather, Mount Agung.

The ANVAYA Beach Resort Bali, Kuta

The ANVAYA Beach Resort occupies a rare location for Kuta - directly by the beach, while the area's main restaurants, shops and entertainment remain within walking distance. It is a large five-star resort, but for a more exclusive stay there are separate suites and villas with private pools, spacious terraces and access to the coast.

The resort's design combines modern luxury with motifs from different periods of Balinese culture. The ANVAYA offers a complete resort experience: several pools, a spa, restaurants and bars, a fitness centre and the beach next to the hotel.
