History of Malang

The history of Malang is connected with its colonial past and local Javanese culture. The city, which played an important role in the development of major kingdoms and grew actively during Dutch colonial rule, was later occupied by the Japanese. In 1945, it became part of the independent Republic of Indonesia.

At the same time, the city still reflects traces of European influence. Walking along Ijen Boulevard, tourists can admire a row of colonial houses, each of which recalls the history of the city.

Architecture and historic centre of Malang

Malang is considered one of the most beautiful cities in East Java, where early 20th-century colonial architecture has been well preserved. While walking through the centre, you can see old mansions, wide boulevards, historic temples and buildings constructed during the Dutch period. Be sure to pay attention to the following attractions:

• Alun-Alun Square (Alun-Alun Malang) - the city's central square and a popular place to relax. Here you can walk in the shade of trees, sit by the fountain, feed pigeons or relax in one of the cafes. A modern playground is available for children.
• Great Mosque of Malang - located next to the square. It is one of the oldest mosques in the city, whose construction began at the end of the 19th century. Its architecture combines Javanese and Arab traditions.
• Ijen Boulevard - one of the most beautiful streets in Malang, with a wide green avenue and Dutch-style mansions. A great place for a leisurely walk and an introduction to the city's colonial past.
• Kayutangan Heritage district - a historic quarter with well-preserved colonial-era buildings, cosy cafes, shops and atmospheric streets. Today it is one of the most popular places for walks in Malang.
• Historic buildings - during a walk you can also see City Hall, Kota Baru railway station, the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Mary of Mount Carmel Cathedral, the historic Oen restaurant, the twin Rajabali buildings, as well as the Kahuripan and Majapahit bridges.

What to visit near Malang

Malang's cultural and architectural diversity also extends to its surroundings, where ancient Hindu-Buddhist temples are located - Singosari and Jago. These places offer an insight into the spiritual life of the region's early inhabitants and feature refined stone carvings.

About 27 kilometres from the city centre is another location for family recreation - Florawisata Santerra de Laponte. This colourful theme park invites visitors into a world of flowers, with hundreds of varieties of ornamental flowering plants, unusual colourful houses for photos and numerous attractions.

About 15 kilometres from Malang is the city of Batu, known for its theme parks and adventure activities. Visit Batu Secret Zoo here, as well as Batu Flower Garden and the Selecta ecotourism attraction, with beautiful flower gardens and refreshing pools.

Hiking routes in Malang

Malang is a base for discovering the natural wonders of East Java.

Coban Rondo Waterfall. One of the most popular attractions is an 84-metre cascade surrounded by lush forests. This route is ideal for trekking and nature photography, offering many opportunities to explore hidden trails and discover secluded places.

Purwodadi Botanical Garden, located about 20 kilometres from Malang, invites visitors to admire an extensive collection of plants, including palms and orchids.

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, known as the "Niagara of Indonesia". It is very impressive, especially after the rainy season. A visit to the waterfall can be included in organised tours to Mount Bromo - an active volcano that is part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

How to get to Malang

• By plane. There are 2 airports in the region. Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG) is a small domestic airport located near Malang. Regular flights connect Malang with Denpasar, Jakarta and Bandung. The nearest international airport is Juanda International Airport (SUB), about 90 kilometres from Malang, near Surabaya. You can get from the airports to the city by bus and taxi.
• By train. There is a railway connection between Malang and Jakarta, as well as Bandung.
• By bus. In addition to rail transport, bus services connect Malang with other cities, including Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang and Jakarta.

Getting around Malang is relatively easy: there are many types of transport, including taxis, minibuses (angkot) and local becaks, a type of cycle transport.
