Documents for Mauritius: full checklist

For citizens of many countries, a simplified visa-free regime applies for tourist trips. However, formalities are taken seriously here.

  • Visa. For a tourist trip of up to 60 days, no visa is needed. At passport control, you will get an entry stamp. If you plan to stay longer, you need to arrange permission in advance.
  • Passport. It must be valid for your entire stay. Unlike many countries, there is formally no requirement for an extra 3 or 6 months of validity, but it is strongly recommended that your passport should not expire right after your departure date. Keep in mind that your flight will most likely include connections, so you need to check the requirements of the "transit" country as well.
  • Mandatory online form "Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form". This is a critically important point. No later than 72 hours before departure, every tourist, including infants, must fill in this electronic form on the official website. After filling it in, you will receive a PDF document with a QR code by email. Be sure to save it on your phone and print it out. Without this document, you may be denied boarding or delayed at the border for a long paper form process.
  • Return flight ticket. At passport control, you will very likely be asked to show proof of departure from the country. This can be a ticket home or to a third country. Be sure to have a printed copy or an electronic file.
  • Proof of accommodation (voucher). Hotel, apartment, or guesthouse booking. The address in the booking must match the one you indicated in the online form.
  • Proof of sufficient funds. The official requirement is to have funds at the rate of $100 per day per person. In practice, this is checked very rarely, but to be fully prepared, it is better to have a recent bank statement in English. An electronic statement from your banking app is fine.
  • Medical insurance. Although it is not included in the official list of mandatory entry documents, traveling to Mauritius without insurance is careless. Medical care for tourists here is very expensive. A simple doctor visit because of a cold can cost €100-150.
  • Documents for children. Every child, regardless of age, must have their own separate passport. If a child is traveling with only one parent or with a third person, a notarized consent letter with a translation into English is required.

Health and medicine kit: what to take with you

Mauritius is one of the safest countries in the region. No special or mandatory vaccinations are required for entry from most countries in the world. The exception is if you arrive from a country endemic for yellow fever - then you will need an international vaccination certificate. It is recommended to check that your standard vaccinations are up to date, such as tetanus, diphtheria, and measles.

The main risk is insects. On the island, there is a year-round risk of dengue fever and chikungunya. These diseases are carried by mosquitoes that are active during the day and in the evening. That is why repellents are absolutely necessary. Take good quality products containing DEET and use them all the time, especially on excursions into the island and in the evenings.

Do not rely on local pharmacies. Prepare a basic set of necessary medicines.

Packing your suitcase

Packing for a tropical island seems like a simple task: swimsuit, shorts, and flip-flops. But Mauritius is an island of contrasts, where there are seasons when the weather can be changeable. The main rule is to choose light, breathable, natural fabrics. Synthetic clothes in high humidity turn into a sauna.

  1. In many good hotels and restaurants, there is a "Smart Casual" dress code in the evening. This means that men in beach shorts and flip-flops may not be allowed in for dinner. So light long trousers and closed shoes should be a priority.
  2. From June to September, evenings in Mauritius, especially on the coast, can be quite cool and windy. The temperature can drop to +18-20°C. A light sweater, cardigan, hoodie, denim jacket, or shawl will be very useful.
  3. A raincoat, windbreaker, or compact umbrella should always be in your backpack when you go on an excursion, and even when you just leave the hotel. This is a tropical island, and a sudden shower can start at any moment, even in the middle of the dry season. If you plan hiking, take clothes that wick away moisture well.
  4. Water shoes. This is not just a recommendation, but safety rule number one on Mauritian beaches. Near the shore, there are often sharp pieces of coral, volcanic stones, and worst of all, sea urchins. Stepping on a sea urchin will definitely ruin several days of your holiday.
  5. Comfortable shoes: you will need either good sneakers or sturdy trekking sandals with support. For the beach, pool, and short walks out of the hotel, take flip-flops or sandals.

What else to take with you to Mauritius

  • Universal socket adapter or adapter for type G. Good hotels sometimes provide one on request.
  • Power bank - an essential thing for long excursions.
  • Waterproof phone case or an action camera for filming the underwater world.
  • Sunscreen with SPF 50+ at minimum. Reapply every 2 hours and after every swim.
  • Clothing with UV protection. You can buy a long-sleeve shirt that protects from the sun. You can swim in it and also use it for hiking.
  • Sunglasses and definitely a hat or cap.

Money in Mauritius

The local currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR or Rs). 1 rupee equals 100 cents. Approximate rate: 1$ is about 46 MUR, 1€ is about 55 MUR. Make sure your US dollar bills were issued no earlier than 2009. Older banknotes may not be accepted for exchange.

There are exchange offices in the arrivals hall, but the rate is slightly lower than in the city. A passport is required for currency exchange.

Using cards and cash

Hotels, most restaurants, supermarkets, and large shops accept cards.

Cash is needed for shopping at markets, paying for street food, small shops, public transport, tips, fruit, and souvenirs in small stalls. Withdraw cash from ATMs of large banks, such as MCB and SBM, and choose to be charged in local currency (MUR) to avoid double conversion.

Transport in Mauritius

Public transport is not very convenient for tourists. To save your time and nerves, choose a rental car or bike for trips around the island. The main roads are of very good quality. However, you should be ready for some features:

  • Left-hand traffic. If you do not have this experience, it is strongly recommended to rent a car with an automatic transmission.
  • Secondary roads leading inland can be narrow, winding, and without night lighting.

If you do not want to drive, a taxi is a convenient but more expensive option.

Taxis in Mauritius do not use meters, and the trip price is agreed verbally. Discuss the price with the driver before you get into the car.

Internet and phone

Buy a local SIM card at the airport, from operators my.t or Emtel. A package with internet gigabytes is inexpensive and will let you use navigation. Hotels have Wi-Fi, but during trips you need mobile internet.

Time in Mauritius

Mauritius lives by its own time - Mauritius Time (MUT), which corresponds to the UTC+4 time zone. This is the same time as in Dubai. The main thing to know: the island does not change to summer or winter time. This means the time zone here is always the same, while the time difference with other countries changes depending on whether they switch to daylight saving time.

Do not forget to choose your accommodation in advance. Wiotto offers a catalog of the best hotels in Mauritius - book at a good price.
