Weather in Mauritius in spring: what to expect from the transition season

Spring in Mauritius is a smooth and very pleasant transition from the humid, hot summer to the dry, comfortable winter. This period can be described as a "golden time", when the ocean is still warm like in summer, the sun is no longer burning, there are fewer tourists, and prices are very pleasant.

The air temperature becomes more comfortable with each month. The summer heat goes away and gives place to pleasant, gentle warmth.

  • In March, the daytime temperature is around +28-30°C. It is still very warm, but without the suffocating humidity of February.
  • In April, it stays at a stable level of +27-28°C.
  • In May, it drops to the most comfortable +25-27°C. Nights become fresher and cooler, especially in May (down to +19-20°C).

Water temperature

The ocean after the hot summer is still incredibly warm, and this is a huge advantage. In March-April the water is warmed up to +27-28°C, and in May it still stays at a comfortable +27°C. This is ideal even for those who love very warm water and allows you to spend hours in the ocean.

Rain and humidity

With each month, the amount of rainfall and the level of humidity noticeably decrease. If in March frequent but short and refreshing tropical showers are still possible, especially in the central part of the island and in the east, then by May the weather becomes mostly dry and sunny across the island.

Cyclones

The risk of cyclones is already minimal by March, and in April-May it almost disappears completely. You can plan your holiday, including sea trips, without worrying about getting caught in a serious storm.

Mauritius in March

In March, Mauritius keeps its tropical atmosphere with constant hot and humid weather. But because it is an island, the weather is different in different places. In the island capital, Port Louis, the sun shines brightly. This time is ideal for a slow walk through the morning markets. But in the area around Mahebourg it rains. Flic en Flac offers quiet evenings. In the town of Curepipe, located at a higher altitude, it is a little cooler (around 23-24°C) and less humid. It is ideal for hiking in the local mountains and forests. Le Morne Brabant in the south-west is a combination of heat and wind. It is suitable for kitesurfing or a walk with breathtaking ocean views. Around Chamarel, with its colorful landscapes and waterfalls, it often rains, but not for long. If you are looking for peace and quiet on the beaches, then Pereybere and Blue Bay on the east coast will suit you, ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Prices are at low season level. This is a great chance to save money. There are fewer tourists than in peak months, which allows you to really relax. The exception is mid-March and the end of the month, when Easter holidays may start in Europe.

What is interesting:

  • Independence Day (March 12). The main national holiday. Official parades take place in Port Louis, and across the island there are concerts and public celebrations with traditional sega music and dancing.
  • Holi - festival of colors. If the date of this bright Hindu holiday falls in March, do not miss the chance to see it, or maybe even join it, when people throw dry colors at each other.
  • Island walks. For example, Black River Gorges National Park. Trails among lush vegetation, past waterfalls and incredible panoramas. It is really a wonderful place for hiking. The heat is not so strong, and there is a light breeze.

Mauritius in April: the "golden" transition month

The weather in April is close to ideal for most travelers. The days are very warm and sunny, on average +28°C, the nights are cooler (around +23°C). Humidity drops noticeably, and rain comes as rare short episodes. The ocean is still warm.

There are not so many tourists in April. But the main factor that affects prices is Easter and the European school holidays connected with it. If they fall in April, hotel and flight prices may rise. Outside this period, you can find very good offers.

What is interesting: the main event is Easter, which is celebrated on the island. Hotels organize special festive brunches, and for children there are traditional chocolate egg hunts.
