Christian Holidays: From Easter to Creole Christmas

Being a predominantly Christian (Catholic) country, Seychelles celebrates all major religious dates with particular pomp.

Easter in Seychelles

In the Seychelles, preparations for Easter begin long before Holy Week. Homes and churches are meticulously cleaned and decorated with fresh flowers, especially hibiscus and frangipani. The anticipation of the holiday and a special joy are palpable everywhere.

On Good Friday, islanders attend church and solemn masses. Processions and street singing are organized. On this day, it is customary to observe a fast, abstaining from meat, and devote time to prayer and reflection. Fish markets are especially lively, as fresh fish and seafood become the staple of the meal.

Easter Sunday is the culmination of the celebration. The morning begins with solemn masses. After the service, families gather at home or on the beach for festive picnics. The festive meal typically consists of traditional dishes, including octopus curry with coconut milk, fried fish of various kinds, and a variety of fruits. Children enthusiastically participate in a hunt for hidden chocolate eggs in gardens or on the beach sand.

Dormition of the Virgin Mary Day

It is celebrated with particular pomp because the Virgin Mary is the patron saint of the islands. On this day, religious processions, solemn church services, and festivals are held, especially in villages with Catholic churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Believers carry statues of the Virgin Mary adorned with flowers.

All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day

Remembrance Days are when families visit cemeteries to honor the memory of the departed. Graves are cleaned and decorated with fresh flowers, and candles are lit. It's a time of quiet reflection and memorial prayers.

Christmas in Seychelles

Long before Christmas, the Seychelles are transformed. Palm trees are adorned with garlands, and houses are brightly illuminated and decorated, often using local materials such as shells and dried leaves. Christmas trees, albeit exotic in appearance, appear on city streets, especially in the Seychelles' capital, Victoria. Shops offer festive merchandise, and markets fill with fresh produce.

On Christmas Eve, families gather for Christmas dinner. Roast suckling pig or turkey are often served, but traditional Creole dishes with seafood, curries, and a variety of salads are also served. After dinner, many attend midnight mass at church, which is one of the most attended services of the year. Churches are ablaze with lights, and the singing of choirs creates a special atmosphere.
