This is not a question of "what is better?", but a question of what suits you and your style of travel. What is the difference between these two tropical paradises in the Indian Ocean?
Choosing between the Seychelles Islands and Mauritius is a real dilemma that many travelers face. Two stunning destinations in the Indian Ocean, both attract with white sandy beaches, turquoise water, and lush tropical greenery. At first glance, they may seem almost identical, but in fact Seychelles and Mauritius have completely different characters, atmosphere, holiday philosophy, and, importantly, pricing policy.

Main features of the two tropical countries
Both Mauritius and Seychelles, besides the sea, spa, pools, and restaurants, have their own unique highlights - the things people really travel to the islands for - unique natural features.
Symbols of the Seychelles Islands
Seychelles is an unusual archipelago where people fly to see a kind of "Jurassic Park", with unique nature - wild, ancient, and as if from the past.
- Giant tortoises. They simply walk around, rest in the shade, and cross the road in front of tourists. This is not an attraction, but a real meeting with living “dinosaurs”. An incredible feeling and the brightest photos. The best places to see tortoises are the Sainte Anne Marine Park, especially the islands of St. Anne and Moyenne, as well as Curieuse Island.
- Coco de Mer. A palm tree with giant nuts that exists only in Seychelles, namely in the Vallée de Mai nature reserve on Praslin Island. Giant leaves overhead, humid air... You get the full feeling that you have entered a prehistoric jungle. The reserve is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is one of the prides of Seychelles.

Mauritius and its highlights
Mauritius is not just an island, but a separate country with a colonial past and a mix of cultures. People should go there for bright “wow effects” and a variety of landscapes. The mecca for tourists in Mauritius:
- "Underwater waterfall". You can easily find mesmerizing photos of this natural phenomenon online. Streams that seem to fall into the depth of the ocean. In fact, this is an optical illusion. Sand and silt from the bottom actually slide into an ocean trench. But from above it looks simply fantastic! It seems as if there is a giant waterfall under water. To see it, you need to book a helicopter tour, but the view is worth it. There is also a viewpoint from the mountain. The effect is not as striking, but the photos are magical. This is the main Instagram spot in Mauritius.
- Chamarel Seven Colored Earth. A small area where the sand lies in layers and shines in seven different colors: red, purple, yellow... At the same time, the colors do not mix. It is a very unusual and colorful place that is included in almost all sightseeing routes on the island.

Geography and getting around
One big Mauritius against a scattering of Seychelles islands.
Imagine one large but compact island with an area of about 2040 sq. km. You can drive around it in 3-4 hours if you do not stop. Everything here is relatively close to each other. You choose a hotel that becomes your base and make daily trips: today to waterfalls and the Seven Colored Earth, tomorrow to the capital for shopping, the day after tomorrow to a safari with lions.
Seychelles is an island-hopping adventure. It is an archipelago of 115 granite and coral islands scattered across the ocean. At the same time, the main life and tourist infrastructure are concentrated only on the three largest ones: the main island of Mahe, where the capital Victoria is located, as well as green Praslin, with its prehistoric forest, and the most authentic island of La Digue. Most often travelers stay on one of the islands and at the same time try to “capture” neighboring ones by booking boat tours and excursions.

Budget: why Mauritius and Seychelles differ in price
Seychelles is much more expensive than Mauritius. You feel it in everything: from the price of a hotel room to the price of a bottle of water in a shop. The difference is especially noticeable in the cost of excursions and boat transfers.
Accommodation in Mauritius: from guesthouses to luxury hotels
Alongside luxury resorts, there are many family guesthouses and apartments where you can live comfortably for 50-80 dollars per night, and sometimes even find options for two from 30 dollars. A very good 4-star beachfront hotel will be available for 120-150 dollars. All-inclusive packages are very popular - for 160-200 dollars per day.
- Large all-inclusive complexes are the signature of Mauritius. Large hotels with spacious well-kept grounds, several pools, many restaurants, often up to 7-10 in one hotel, kids’ clubs, spa centers, and a full range of entertainment.
- Golf resorts in Mauritius. The island has some of the best golf courses in the world, and many hotels, such as Heritage Le Telfair or Constance Belle Mare Plage, are built around them.
- Boutique hotels: small, stylish, with an emphasis on design and personal service, often with an adults-only concept.

Hotels in Seychelles - only luxury?
The choice of hotels in Seychelles is more limited and strongly shifted towards the premium segment. Some of the most expensive hotels in the world on private islands are located here. They are the ones that shape the image of the destination. There are fewer large resorts here, but more cozy boutique hotels, exclusive villas, and private island hotels. Still, on the large inhabited island of Mahe you can find more budget-friendly accommodation options.
Budget Seychelles. Recently, the segment of guesthouses and villas has been developing, but the choice is still not that wide. In Seychelles there are self-catering apartments and cozy guesthouses where you can stay comfortably for 70-120 dollars per night. These options often offer a fully equipped kitchen.
Boutique hotels. On the main islands of Mahe and Praslin, smaller hotels are more common than in Mauritius, often made up of separate villas harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape.
Chain hotels. There are excellent Four Seasons, Hilton, including Waldorf Astoria and Mango House brands, Kempinski, Constance Hotels, and Anantara. The price of a room in a good 4-star hotel starts from 300 dollars per night, and in a 5-star hotel from 400 dollars and higher, depending on the resort. All-inclusive options are rare and will cost from 600 dollars per day.
Private island hotels. This is the peak of Seychelles luxury and a unique phenomenon on a world scale. This is where Seychelles reaches a completely different level of exclusivity. Hotels such as North Island, Fregate Island Private, Six Senses Zil Pasyon or Four Seasons Desroches Island, are not just resorts, but entire private worlds. The price of a villa on such islands often starts from $3,000 per day and can reach $15,000-20,000 and more.

How the beaches of Mauritius and Seychelles differ
Calm lagoons against wild bays with granite boulders. The difference between the two destinations is most visible exactly on the coast.
What beaches are like in Mauritius
Almost the whole island, except for part of the southern coast, is surrounded by a powerful coral reef that creates calm and shallow lagoons. The water here is always warm and almost without waves, which makes Mauritius an ideal and absolutely safe place for families with small children.
Beaches such as Belle Mare, Trou aux Biches, Flic en Flac are kilometers of white sand, along which hotels are often located with all the necessary infrastructure: sun loungers, umbrellas, bars, and water sports centers. In general, beaches in Mauritius guarantee a comfortable and safe holiday.

What the coasts are like in Seychelles
If your main goal is to see the most beautiful, most photogenic, and most unusual beaches in the world, then your choice is Seychelles. Giant granite boulders, wild secluded bays, the play of light and shadow - these are real works of art created by nature itself. However, because there is no continuous protective reef, many of the beaches are uncomfortable and sometimes even unsuitable for swimming. You may encounter strong waves, dangerous underwater currents, sudden depth near the shore, or a rocky bottom.
The quality of beach holidays in Seychelles depends a lot on the season and the specific bay. Still, there are exceptions: for example, the famous Beau Vallon beach on Mahe is a long and wide strip of sand with very calm water, which in beauty and comfort is not inferior to the best beaches of Mauritius.

Climate differences
The successful location near the equator, 4-10° south latitude, creates very stable weather in Seychelles throughout the year, without sharp temperature changes and almost without cyclone risk. This makes Seychelles a safe choice for a trip in the European winter, from December to March. However, be ready for high humidity at any time of year and unpredictable short tropical showers, especially during the monsoon period. Forecasts often do not come true, and a clear day can suddenly turn into rain, and vice versa.
Mauritius lies much farther south, closer to the Tropic of Capricorn, 20° south latitude. That is why the island has a hot, humid summer, followed by a cooler and drier winter. The Mauritian summer lasts from November to April. This is a hot and humid period, accompanied by a cyclone risk from January to March. This means Mauritius is less comfortable than Seychelles during the same period. For the ideal mild season without exhausting heat and humidity, there is nothing better than the Mauritian winter, from May to October.
- Seychelles - from December to March.
- Mauritius - from May to October.
For a beach holiday with a warm ocean at any time of year, choose the Seychelles Islands. In the shoulder seasons - April-May and September-November - both destinations offer excellent weather, and the choice will depend on other factors.
