History of the island
In the 18th century, the island was discovered by French sailors. Captain Nicholas Morphy anchored off the island on St. Anne's Day, which is why he got the name. Initially, this coast served as a whaling station. During World War II, it became a military base. The environment has been damaged for a long time. Corals were used in construction and sea turtles were eaten. Uncontrolled fishing threatens marine biodiversity. It was only in 1973 that Saint Anne Marine National Park was established, the first in the Indian Ocean.
