Bali has humid tropical forests, rice terraces, palm groves and dense vegetation. Almost the entire island remains green all year round. Lombok looks different. The climate is drier here, so many hills turn golden during the dry season and resemble savannah. Instead of dense jungle, open landscapes, savannah and wide grassy plains are more common.

Another noticeable difference is the pace of tourism development. New villas, hotels and cafes continue to be built actively in Bali, especially in the resort areas of Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud. The most convenient way to travel around the islands is by rented scooter or car, although the road situation is noticeably different.

Bali's main problem is traffic jams. They are especially common in major resort areas, in Denpasar and in Ubud. Even a short trip can sometimes take much longer than the navigation app suggests.

Grab and Gojek operate on the island, although local transport providers still restrict their activities in some tourist areas. Bali also has Teman Bus city buses and Kura-Kura Bus tourist shuttles, but most travellers still choose to rent transport.

Transport in Lombok

Roads in Lombok are much less busy, so travelling around the island is far more comfortable. Renting a scooter remains the most popular way to get around, and the distances between the main beaches and attractions can be covered much faster.

Public transport is poorly developed. DAMRI buses run from the airport and connect it with Mataram, Senggigi and Bangsal Port, but most tourists use taxis or rented transport.

How to get there: Bali or Lombok

Getting to Bali is easier and faster. It is home to one of Indonesia's largest international airports, Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, which receives direct and connecting flights from dozens of countries. Most tourists reach their hotel within 20-60 minutes after arrival.

Lombok also has an international airport, but there are considerably fewer direct international flights. Most often, travellers fly to Bali and then continue to the neighbouring island.

Flight from Bali to Lombok

The fastest way to reach Lombok is a domestic flight. Flights between the islands operate several times a day, take about 30 minutes and run daily. However, the flight time is not the only factor to consider. The journey to Bali airport can take 1-2 hours because of traffic, followed by check-in and baggage collection. After arriving in Lombok, you also need to travel by car to the popular resorts: about 40 minutes to Kuta Lombok and just over an hour to Senggigi. As a result, the journey from a hotel in Bali to a hotel in Lombok usually takes 4-5 hours.

Ferry between Bali and Lombok

Another option is a fast boat or ferry. This way of travelling lets you see the islands from the sea and is often included in combined itineraries around Indonesia. However, during rough ocean conditions, especially in the windy season, fast boat services may be temporarily suspended. Therefore, flying usually remains the more reliable option.

Both Bali and Lombok are considered among the most affordable Indonesian islands for independent travel. However, a holiday in Lombok is generally slightly cheaper. The difference is particularly noticeable in accommodation, food, vehicle rental and some excursions.

Bali offers a huge choice of accommodation, from inexpensive guesthouses to luxurious villas with a private pool. Thanks to strong competition, it is easy to find a comfortable option for almost any budget.

Budget holidays in Bali. Guesthouses and small hotels cost approximately $20-40 per night. For $50-100, you can already rent a modern villa with a pool, especially in Ubud, Sanur or Canggu.

Hotels and resorts. Good 4-star hotels in Bali usually cost $120-250 per night, while the price of luxury resorts can exceed $500.

Prices in cafes also vary widely. You can have lunch at a local warung for only $3-6, while dinner at a popular restaurant costs $20-40 per person.

There are fewer tourists in Lombok, so prices for accommodation, vehicle rental and food are usually 15-20% lower.

Hotels and resorts. Prices for four- and five-star hotels start at $100-200 per night, and even premium resorts are often cheaper than comparable options in Bali.
