Are you considering the Seychelles for the first time and don't know anything about this paradise? We'll tell you everything you need to know about the archipelago's islands, hotels, transfers, and attractions.
Seychelles for Beginners: A Few Facts
- The Seychelles is one of the smallest countries in the world. It consists of 115 islands scattered in the Indian Ocean just south of the equator, east of Africa.
- The largest and most developed island is Mahé. It is quite large by local standards and occupies almost a quarter of the entire Seychelles.
- Mahe is home to the capital of the Seychelles, Victoria, as well as the international airport where most tourists arrive, and many popular attractions such as nature reserves, beaches, and parks.
- Tourism in the Seychelles began to actively develop not so long ago, about 25 years ago, so it is a relatively new direction.
- There are no high mountains in the Seychelles. The highest point is Morne Seychellois in the national park of the same name, at just over 900 meters.
- The Seychelles time zone is GMT+4. If you're from Europe, the difference will be small, just 1-2 hours. It's the same as Dubai. All about the time in the Seychelles can be found here.

Islands of the Seychelles archipelago
The islands are divided into two main groups:
- The Mahé group (inner islands): these are about 40 central islands, mountainous and rocky, with narrow strips of beach and lush tropical vegetation. These islands offer simply magical views of white beaches and clear lagoons. The most famous and most populated are Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. On Mahé, you'll find all the necessary infrastructure—hotels, cafes, shops, markets, a hospital, and ATMs. Praslin is also quite developed. The rest of the archipelago offers a more natural and tranquil atmosphere.
- The Outer Islands: approximately 70 flat coral islands. They are generally uninhabited and have no water sources.

Weather in the Seychelles: When is the best time to fly to the islands?
The Seychelles is a tropical destination, so it's never cold here. Temperatures are always perfect for a vacation, ranging from 24 to 32 degrees Celsius. The main characteristic is high humidity. There are no clear seasons in the Seychelles: the weather changes depending on the monsoon winds.

How to choose a hotel in the Seychelles: a few tips
1. Set a budget. The first thing you need to consider is how much you're willing to spend on accommodation. The Seychelles isn't always exorbitantly expensive. Yes, the archipelago is known for its luxury villas costing thousands of dollars per night. But you can also find a cozy guesthouse or apartment for $50-$100 per night. Generally, Seychelles hotels can be divided into the following categories:
- 5-star hotels. Everything is top-notch – service, views from the room, food, luxurious infrastructure. Many exclusive hotels are located on separate islands, similar to the Maldives. However, you won't find overwater bungalows in the Seychelles.
- 4-star hotels. These are often boutique hotels with a single restaurant and no spa or kids' clubs. However, there are also very decent options with spacious grounds, varied food options, and swimming pools.
- 3-star hotels or guesthouses. The most affordable option, especially on Mahe and Praslin. They are often located on hills, so you'll have to walk to the beach. If such an inexpensive option is located by the sea, check what the beach is like. Not all of them are suitable for swimming due to strong currents. Before choosing a hotel, find out everything you need to know about the best beaches and where they are.

2. Decide on an island. They are all different! Based on your preferences, decide how far into the tropics you're willing to venture. Don't forget about transportation, if needed, and any additional travel expenses.
- Mahe. The island offers a wide selection of hotels, cafes, and markets. You won't have to spend money on transfers to other islands or worry about getting back to the airport—everything is close by. All major excursions take place on the main island. Public transportation and car rentals are available. This is the most budget-friendly option for your trip.
- Praslin. The island is famous for its photogenic beaches, such as Anse Lazio, and the stunning Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. It's the second largest island, with civilization in harmony with nature. Public transportation and car rentals are available. You can also get there by ferry from Mahé.
- La Digue: a small eco-island with virtually no cars. Here you can ride bicycles, buggies, and ox-drawn carts. The perfect spot for romance and solitude, with its beautiful Anse Source d'Argent beach, is accessible by ferry.
- Private islands. Many of these islands have just one hotel, but it's incredibly luxurious. For example, Six Senses Zil Pasyon on Félicité Island, Four Seasons on Desroches Island, Cerf Island, North Island… These hotels are the most luxurious, and flights here are not cheap, as they are usually only accessible by helicopter or charter.
- Learn about the beach. There are no overwater bungalows in the Seychelles, but there are hotels with incredible views from the hills or right on the shore. All beaches are public, but some private areas require a reservation if you are not a hotel guest. One downside is that not all Seychelles beaches are suitable for swimming due to strong waves and currents.
- If snorkeling is a priority. Not all hotels are located near reefs. The best snorkeling is on coral islands. Entry into the sea isn't always ideal, so coral shoes are a must! Find the best snorkeling spots in the Seychelles here.
- Meal options. Everything depends on the hotel you choose. If you're traveling to a private island, there are no meal options other than hotel restaurants, so you'll need to choose an all-inclusive or boarding option. Keep in mind that there aren't many all-inclusive hotels in the Seychelles. However, when you stay on larger, populated islands, you have a choice of cafes and restaurants outside the hotel. Dining in authentic establishments will be cheaper than in resort restaurants.

Transfers in the Seychelles: How to get to your hotel
After arriving at the airport, you'll be transferred to your hotel. Please confirm details in advance when booking, as transfers may not be included. Guesthouses and budget hotels are typically accessible by tourists.
- Shared sea transfer: If your hotel is on another island, you'll likely be offered a catamaran or boat for several guests. This is a more economical option. Not suitable for remote islands.
- Private sea transfer: charter a private boat or yacht. A more expensive option that allows you to choose a convenient time and maintain privacy.
- Helicopter or plane. Remote luxury hotels that occupy an entire island offer guests exclusive transfers.
- By car or bus. This option is for those who have booked a hotel on Mahé. You and other tourists will be picked up from the airport. Alternatively, this transfer can be arranged privately. If your hotel doesn't provide a transfer and you're traveling independently, check with your hotel about the best option. This could include a taxi or even a public bus.

Medicine in the Seychelles: What You Need to Know
Special vaccinations are generally not required for travel to the Seychelles; the standard vaccination schedule is sufficient. If medical care is needed, there is a hospital in the capital, Victoria, on Mahé Island. However, access to qualified medical care is limited on the outlying islands.
Check your health insurance in advance. It should cover emergencies and, if necessary, medical evacuation. Bring insect repellent: apply regularly, especially if you find yourself in the tropics in the evening. Keep in mind that mosquito-borne fevers are sometimes reported. Mosquito nets are a must in your home. Don't neglect simple safety precautions!

Money in the Seychelles: How to Pay
It's best to fly to the Seychelles with euros or dollars. Euros are in high demand and can be exchanged for local rupees upon arrival.
The local currency is the Seychelles rupee (SCR). One dollar is equivalent to approximately 14 rupees (the exchange rate is subject to change). Banknotes and coins are accepted. ATMs are not available on all islands, but they are easy to find on Mahé and Praslin. Restaurants, tourist shops, and large hotels generally accept Mastercard, Visa, and American Express cards. You can exchange money at banks, but keep in mind that they are usually open until 3:30 PM. You can also exchange money at hotels or at the airport upon arrival.
